Dear Parent,
Congratulations to our school netball squad who took part in the area Netball Tournament this week. Everyone played with enthusiasm and were a credit to our school. The team members were :
Meghan Thompson Molly Corfe Ellie Lang
Bethany Balment Madeleine Mansell Jules Davies
Joshua Haydn-Higgins Dylan Vickery Lizzie Trounson
Bryony Newnham Shannon Straughan Georgie Comerford
Congratulations also to Jack Goddard who took part in the North Devon Music Centre Spring Concert this week, playing the cello.
We assume that all children at present learning the flute/fife or guitar at school will continue next term. Please let me know immediately if this is not the case. If your child is in Year 3 or above, and would like to learn one of these instruments please have a word with me.
All being well we hope to take next year's Years 5 and 6 to Paignton for our residential week. The cost will probably be in the region of £180 - for hotel accomodation, all food, entrances and transport. If you think your child would be interested (in the past nearly everyone has gone) perhaps you could start saving!
We had a successful Family Learning session recently for parents and pupils of Class 2. We would like to develop this so, starting on Monday 23rd April (for 4 afternoons) Family Learning sessions have been arranged. Places are limited, so please bbok early to ensure your involvement. Class 2 have been given copies of a yellow sheet with details and a booking form. A creche may be available so long as you write this on your return slip.
Thanks to all those who arranged last Saturday's successful Easter Craft afternoon. Next Thursday (the last day of term) we plan to hold an Easter Egg Hunt around the school grounds - eggs kindly donated by our Friends Association.
You are welcome to join us for Tuesday's simple EasterService commencing at 9.15am in the Parish Church.
School closes on Thursday 5th April and re-opens on Monday 23rd April.

Dear Parents,
This is the week for thanking our Friends Association (PTA) to which all parents and staff belong. The Friends kindly financed Monday's very enjoyable visit of Kevin Sutherland (who draws for the 'Beano' comic) to show children how to produce cartoons. His lessons were highly entertaining and the children gained a lot. The Friends have also contributed a lot towards this term's swimming lessons for Years 4 - 6. Progress of nearly all children has been highly significant. Special thanks must go to Alex Smith and Kate Rippin who have voluntarily helped each week. As a school we are lucky to have such a wealth of supportive parents.

Admission to School : If you know of anyone with a pre-school child who might be considering Swimbridge School, please ask them to contact us as soon as possible. we have a simpler admission system than the official County process and are able to register prospective pupils many years in advance, as long as we know about them. There are only a limited number of places, and we would hate anyone to be disappointed.
Next Week's Cool Kids Programme includes :
Monday - Cooking (Minestrone Soup) Tuesday - Games Wednesday - Art and Craft Thursday - Cooking (Red pepper, mozarella and spinach melts) Friday - Film Night - Barnyard
Is your child booked in for the special film show of Barnyard on Friday 30th March? Bookings can still be made.
Don't forget Saturday's Friends Easter Craft Activity afternoon in the Jubilee Hall from 2-4pm. This should be an exciting event for all the family. Unfortunately I will be hopping across the channel, but I look forward to seeing the results of your labours!!
On the PTA newsletter, there is also details about the next Children's Disco.
We hope to hold our Easter service in the Parish Church on Tuesday 3rd April. Everyone is invited. Term ends on Thursday 5th April and the summer term commences on Monday 23rd April.
We provide supervision for our pupils from 8.30am each day. Please ensure that your child does not arrive before this time. We have a number of children (and sometimes even adults) that arrive much earlier. Despite repeated requests, we still have some children with un-named clothing (especially PE kit) and coats without hooks to keep them on their pegs. Please support the school in these matters.
This week we took delivery of a large amount of free PE and playground equipment, courtesy of Tesco Sports Vouchers, including cheerleader pompoms, dancing rings, mini tennis, basketball hoop, stop watches and much more. Children are already using these. Please continue with Tesco and Sainsburys voucher collections!!
We recently received an e-mail (copy attached) detailing benefits for families with children with special needs, which some might find of interest.

Friday 16th March 2007
Dear Parents,
Our Red Nose events have raised £ 152 for Comic Relief. Many thanks to everyone for your support. On Monday we hope to have the visit of Kevin Sutherland who works for the Beano Comic, funded by our Friends Association. He will be showing children how to draw cartoon characters, so it should be very exciting. This is part of our 'enrichment' programme of unusual events (like the visits of the planetarium and Exmoor Zoo and various music, drama and sporting events) to broaden our children's education. Due to this visit, there will be no recorders for Class 3 on Monday afternoon, but Class 4 will have their recorder lesson as usual.
On Tuesday, Class 3 will be travelling to the Burton Gallery in Bideford. Class 4 will be having their final swim on Tuesday afternoon. Thursday's science visit to North Wyke Farm was very successful.
Cool Kids events for next week are :
Monday 19th Cookery (fruit and vegetable kebabs)
Tuesday 20th Games
Wednesday 21st Craft (foam caterpillar/ Hama beads)
Thursday 22nd Cooking (Rhubarb Crumble)
Friday 23rd` Bingo
Bookings can be made at the school office.
At this school all KS2 pupils are taught a musical instrument. Please make sure that your child practices for at least 10 minutes every day. We also strongly recommend that all children read with parents or by themselces for a minimum of 15 minutes a day; if this is done the progress within six months can be phenomenal!! One pupil many years ago really struggled with reading up to age 7. Her parents, using school books and guidance, read with her every day for 6 months and her reading age progressed by almost 2 years; school helped quite a bit of course. She is now an English teacher at a Secondary School!
Well done to these swimmers who have achieved these national awards:
Silver ASA Bronze ASA
Jack Goddard Millie Cloak
Luke Dawson Georgie Comerford
Jocie Dyer Bethany Hill
Meghan Thompson Lucille Verton
Saskia Beer Ellie Lang
Madeleine Mansell Peter Dawson
Shannon Straughan
Olivia Rippin
Bryony Newnham
Distance:
Lizzie Trounson 200 metres
The progress that so many children have made with their swimming has only been possible because of the financial support of our Friends Association.
Don't forget these Friends events :
Sat 24th March Easter Craft afternoon 2-4 pm. Cakes needed pleaase.
Thurs 5th April Childrens Disco from 6.15pm onwards
Both events take place in the Jubilee Hall.
Please remember that we are collecting :
Sainsburys vouchers
Tesco vouchers
Empty Ice Cream tubs
Dressing Up clothes
We still have a lot of unclaimed lost property in the office, including a whole black bin bag full of various items of P.E. clothing. Please come and have a look to see if any belong to your child/ren.
If you have any concers about your child at school or would like an update on progress, please book an after-school appointment with your child's teacher.
Happy Mothers Day!!

Friday 9th March 2007
Dear Parents,
Many thanks for all the Tesco and Sainsbury's vouchers. The more we collect the more equipment we can provide for our children.
Next week's Cool Kids programme is :
Monday Cooking
Tuesday Games, e.g. Monopoly, cards etc
Wednesday Art and Craft - Mothers Day activities
Thursday St Patricks Day - Cookies/Biscuits
Friday Film - showing Ant Bully
Watch out for the Cool Kids Talent competition - details later. Our future film nights will be :
Friday 30th March - showing Barnyard
Friday 27th April - showing Open Season
We are desperately in need of :
4 litre ice cream boxes to house new reading books
Dressing up clothes for lunch times and Cool Kids Club. Adult clothing, hats, scarves, handbags etc are very welcome
Please ensure that your child has his/her names sweatshirt in school every day.
Next Thursday, Class 4 will be travelling to Wyke Farm, south of Torrington, for a fun morning of science activities relating to the environment and agriculture. This 'Science Farm' has plenty of hands on practical opportunities and has proved very popular in the past. Children will have to leave at 8.00am (please note this early time) and will be arriving back at school at 1.45pm, so they will need a packed lunch, drink and usual school uniform. Please complete the parental consent form below. We are able to fund the visit, but the cost of transport is quite expensive, so donations of £3.50 per child (£6.00 for 2) would be very welcome.
Friday 16th March is Red Nose Day. We aim to mark this with various events, and invite children (for a donation of £1) to wear red clothing rather than school uniform. Red noses (which can be worn on the day) are available from Sainsbury's. During the morning break we will be holding a sale of buns and biscuits, comics and books. All funds will go to the red nose appeal, so children might like to bring along some spending money in addition to the £1 'non-uniform' donation. We hope parents will support this by sending items for sale on the day please.

Dear Parents,
School closes tonight for the half term holiday and re-opens at 8.45am on Monday 26th February.

Please ensure that all of your child's clothing is labelled and all coats have a hanging tag so they can remain on coat hooks. Thank you to all parents for your support in maintaining our school uniform. Many visitors to our school comment on this, and the general good behaviour of our pupils.
Recently we took delivery of an additional octagonal picnic bench for the children to use in the playground. This has a plaque on it commemorating Pam Hutchings, a lunch time supervisor at our school for 25 years, who died last year. At her funeral a collection was made to provide a memorial.
Thursday 1st March is World Book Day. To mark this all children will come home today with a free £1 Book Token to spend in a book shop. To mark World Book Day this year, we will be having readings of favourite books and stories read by members of staff. In addition we invite all children to bring to school a small item to represent a book, (e.g. a peach stone for James and the Giant Peach). We will be asking children to keep their item, and book title, a secret until the appropriate time.
Also on World Book Day three of our older children will be taking part in the North Devon Schools Book Quiz.
On Mondays we hope that all Year 6 children will be involved in Science Booster Classes, to prepare for the SAT's in May. These will start at 2.45pm and continue until 3.30pm each Monday, and should be very useful.

Can I remind you that children should arrive at school between 8.30 and 8.45am. They should not arrive before 8.30am. After this time we provide supervision, prior to lessons starting at 8.45am. Recently, we have had a number of children arriving much earlier. Conversely, a few children are regularly arriving after 8.45am.
If your child is unable to attend school, please phone the office before 9.15am. This is for the safety of all, to ensure that you know, and we know, wher every pupil is.
Teachers are happy to meet with parents to discuss children's progress. Feel free to book an after-school consultation.
In the unlikely event of severe weather possibly affecting school opening, please listen to Lantern F.M. or Radio Devon, or phone school. There is also an 'Urgent Announcement' page on our school web-site, in the News section. In the past our school has usually remained open when others have closed. If snow causes us to close early we will phone parents - another reason to keep us completely up to date with your contact details.
Cool Kids Club is planning a special viewing of 'Hoodwinked' ("The funniest animated movie since Shrek") on Friday 16th February. Popcorn and drinks will be provided. There will also be a Karaoke evening on Friday 2nd March. Early bookings are advised. A reminder that our regular Cool Kids themed evenings include :
Tuesdays - Games, Wednesdays - Craft, and the popular Cookery on Thursdays.
We are collecting Sainsbury's Active Kids vouchers to enhance our playtimes. Please help if you can.
School closes for half term on Friday 16th February, and re-opens on Monday 26th February.

Well done also to Tilly Swanson who raised money to adopt an Alpacca at Exmoor Zoo - this instead of birthday presents. The local newspapers have more about the story.
Next Tuesday Class 4 will be joined by children from Goodleigh Primary School in the Jubilee Hall for a 'Maths Problem Solving' morning. This should be a lively and enriching occasion.
At this week's Governors meeting we marked the retirement of Kay Pigden, who has been clerk to the governors for around 12 years, following a period as a governor herself. She was presented with a framed photograph of the school and 2 vouchers. I am sure you join with me in thanking her for her years of service to our school. We are at present advertising for a replacement clerk, so if you know of anyone who may be interested in this position, please see me.
Can I thank parents for their continued support for the school. Can I remind you of the importance of reading with your child, ideally daily, and encouraging your child with homework activities and musical instrument practice.

Dear Parents,
Special congratulations go to many children in Years 5 and 6 who took part in the Mathematical Association annual challenge. Madeleine Mansell and Steven Trawin were both awarded a bronze award, while Billy Floyd sachieved a silver award.
Congratulations also to Georgie Comerford for swimming 500mtrs this week.
Next Tuesday the Friends Association is holding a further meeting - everyone is invited, at 8.00pm in the Jack Russell. As this clashes with a Governors meeting, unfortunately a few of us will be absent.
Head lice continue to present a problem for all schools. Please check your child's hair this weekend, and regularly following this. Children with long hair are especially vulnerable to infestation, and more likely to spread once infected so, once again we request that all children with long hair have it tied back. Attached to this letter is a free headlice comb and instructions for each family. School has purchased these so please use them and remember - long hair - tied back please.
Don't forget the invaluable Year 6 SAT's revision books are still available from the office.
DVD's of 'Up the Beanstalk' are being copied as I write, and will be distributed to those who ordered them. This is the final chance to order a copy at £6.00
Teachers will happily see parents about their children's progress. Just book an after-school appointment.

On Monday next (22nd January) the children in Class 3 have been invited to Brayford School for a percussion workshop, following our enjoyable 'Drum Crazy' workshop held here last year. The school is paying for this event so we will not be asking for parental contributions.
Year 6 children are preparing for the SAT's next May. We had very good attendance at our first Maths Club on Tuesday after school. Information about future Science/English revision activities will follow. In the meantime I can strongly recommend the purchase (and use) of CGP KS2 Study Books. These are available from book sellers at £4.50 each. However, to encourage purchase, we have ordered several copies, and can make them available to you at £3.00 each, or £7.50 for all three. We hope all Year 6 children will be able to have these. Please use the order form below or purchase directly from the school office.
If you think you may be entitled to free school meals, but are unsure about which benefits qualify, you can visit the web-site www.devon.gov.uk/free_school_meals.htm to find out.
Please ensure that if your child has something to eat during morning break, it is only fruit, vegetable or cheese. A few children are bringing manufactured 'fruit' bars, which are really sweets. Obviously KS1 children receive free fruit as part of the Government scheme.
Don't forget ..... eyes down for family bingo at 6.30 tonight in the Jubilee Hall.

Dear Parents,
Year 4,5 and 6 swimming started very successfully on Tuesday. Many thanks to those who have already sent in their donation to help with transport costs. We look forward to your contribution if we have not yet received it.
Orders are now being taken for DVD's of 'Up the Beanstalk', our recent Year 3 - 6 pantomime. Copies can be ordered at £6.00 each - any profit will go towards our continued sponsorship of our two third world children. A special thanks to Mr Mansbridge for producing this DVD.
The possibility of the school acquiring part of the Glebe Field, opposite the school, alongside a community play area has greatly increased recently, as part of the proposed housing development between the Jubilee Hall and the Vicarage. We have been assured that before building starts on our present temporary field, we will have access to the larger space right opposite the school. Details of the planning application can be found online in the planning section of NDDC website, or copies are in the school office if you wish to have a look.
Don't forget the Friends (PTA) Family Bingo evening in the Jubilee Hall on Friday 19th January at 6.30pm. This is for children, parents, family and friends - see you there!
As always, if you have any concerns about your child, please book an after-school appointment with your child's teacher.
Following our recent accolade of topping the 'value-added' SAT league tables in the area, we have just been awarded the 'Activemark' by DfES, for exceptional delivery within the national school sport strategy - which is great, especially as, at the moment our sporting facilities are limited.
Book club leaflets are attached. If you would like to place an order, please return the form to the school office by 19th January.
If you ordered a calendar/recipe book before Christmas, and have not yet sent in the payment, please could you do so as soon as possible. Thankyou.

Friday 5th January 2007
Dear Parents,
Welcome back to the Spring Term 2007.
From next Tuesday, Years 4, 5 and 6 will be swimming at the North Devon Leisure Centre every Tuesday afternoon until 20th March. Children will need a named towel, swimming costume and swimming cap please. It is our aim to help develop children's confidence in the water by teaching non-swimmers to swim, and to develop stamina and water safety techniques for those who can already swim. Children will leave school around 12.55pm, and return by around 2.50pm. You will appreciate that the cost of pool hire and transport is very expensive. Fortunately our Friends Association is going to cover some of the cost. To help further, we request a contribution of £10 towards transport for the 10 week session (£16.00 for two children). Please complete the form below.
You will notice that Year 4 children are having additional swimming sessions; they swam last term as well.
I would like to publicly thank Kate Rippin for voluntarily helping teach swimming last term and this term.
From Tuesday 16th January, we start Maths Club from 3.20pm to 4.15pm. This is for all Year 6 pupils; besides broadening their mathematical experience, we hope that it will help prepare them for their SAT tests in May. These should be enjoyable occasions, and to this end parents have usually taken it in turns to provide a drink and a snack for the group; a rota will soon appear on the class door. Computer Club will re-start in the Summer Term.
Attached to this letter for Class 4 is a note about the curriculum to be covered this term, which hopefully will be of interest.
This week's North Devon Gazette includes this article about our school
Interestingly the same photo and text appeared before Christmas, but Swimbridge was mistakenly replaced by Sticklepath. The editor has no idea how or why!!
Attached to this letter is a list of term dates until Summer 2008.
At long last, following admin problems at Ofsted, our Cool Kids Club has been officially registered. Should you need to claim Tax Credit etc. the registration number is EY345329.
Recorders for Classes 3 and 4 re-start on Monday 15th January. Please ensure your child has his/her music and instrument in school. Guitars and Flutes re-start next week.
Dinner Money for this half term is £8.25 per week, £54.45 up to and including Friday 16th February. As always, please make cheques payable to Devon County Council. If you pay by cash, please put the money in a named envelope. All weekly paid dinner money should be brought into the school office on Monday mornings please.
Friday 30th March 2007

Congratulations to our school netball squad who took part in the area Netball Tournament this week. Everyone played with enthusiasm and were a credit to our school. The team members were :
