21 Jul 2006 - Weekly Newsletters: Summer Term 2006
Weekly Newletter No 23
Thursday 20th July 2006
Dear Parents,
This is the last newsletter of the school year as we close tomorrow at 3.15pm. School re-opens on Tuesday 5th September at 8.45am.
Our after school club will continue to operate every school day from the first day of term. If you would like to book your child in for 'Cool Kids Club' for specific days or whole weeks, you must book in advance - the school office has booking forms.
All children in Years 3 to 6 have instrument lessons in school. Some opt for guitars or flute/fife. Because we 'buy-in' teachers for these instruments, a charge of approximately £42 is made for 10 lessons per term (flute/fife), or £50 for 12 guitar lessons, which represents very good value. If you haven't already booked lessons please do so quickly.
You know that children in Classes 3 and 4 who do not have flute or guitar lessons in school have recorder lessons, for which there is no charge. These children need a plastic (not wooden) recorder please, available from any music shop at approximately £4-5. Please note that 'toy' recorders are not suitable.
Swimming for 2006/7 has been booked at the South Molton pool for our younger children (details next term), with older ones swimming at North Devon Leisure Centre from January.
We are grateful that all our children wear the school uniform. Unfortunately this year we have had a large number of unnamed and unclaimed sweatshirts; we still have about 20. Please collect any lost property immediately as we will have to dispose of the remainder during the holiday. We welcome donations of outgrown school sweatshirts for our thrift shop.
A reminder that for P.E. we ask that all children wear red polo shirts, preferably with a logo. Shorts should be black shorts.
PE/Games Kit needed:
For P.E.
P.E. shorts (black)
Red polo shirt, with collar and school logo
Short white socks
Plimsolls or trainers (not those worn during the rest of the day)
For Gymnastics:
Leotard or one-piece swimming costume or shorts and polo shirt (as P.E. kit)
For Games (usually Wednesday), depending on weather :
P.E. kit as above or
Track suit or
Jogging trousers and sweat shirt and jumper (not those worn during the rest of the day)
Trainers or plimsolls; for football and tag rugby?football boots or old shoes.
For swimming :
One-piece swimming costume
Towel
Swimming Cap
Please ensure that all school uniform and P.E. kit is labelled and school footwear is appropriate. We prefer P.E./Games kit to be in a draw string bag/plimsoll bag, not carrier bags please.
It is vital that children do not wear their school clothes or shoes for P.E. or Games sessions.
We are very grateful for the great support that parents give our school, not least with the school uniform.
Congratulations to the following children for achieving the highest percentage attendance this year :
Peter Dawson
Jocie Dyer
Tyler Newnham
Caitlin O'Brien
Shannon Straughan
Bethany Vickery 97.9% which represents only 2 days absence
closely followed by
Danny Lakeman with 97.6% (3 days absence)
We bid farewell to our Year 6 leavers today, and a few other children who are moving away from the area. We wish them all the best as they move on to their new schools.
We will also lose Claire Nicholson, who has assisted with Class 1 so admirably and who continues her course elsewhere, and to Lisa Adams who has been so helpful in establishing our Cool Kids Club.
This has been another successful year and we appreciate the support of parents and governors. If you need to contact us during the holidays, please use the Enquiry page of the school website (address below).

Weekly Newsletter No 22
Friday 14th July 2006
Dear Parents,
Saturday's Summer Fayre was a great success. £ 1,033.00 was raised and everyone seemed to have a very enjoyable time. Thanks to everyone who helped in whatever way.
School closes for the Summer holiday on Friday 21st July; we re-open on Tuesday 5th September.
Our end of term assembly (to which parents of Year 6 children are invited) will take place on Thursday - not Friday - at 9.10am. Older children will be presented with a book 'It's Your Move'which is designed for anyone moving on to Secondary Schools. This includes space for autographs - useful, as we do not allow Year 6 children to copy the trend of gathering autographs on school sweatshirts.
Can I remind you of a few important procedures which make the running of the school more efficient:
please label all clothing, Currently we have 30+ unclaimed sweatshirts of which at least 20 are not named. Please name all t-shirts and sweatshirts at the label (and elsewhere if required). Daws (Cross Street) will embroider intials into the fabric for 50p per letter, or 'Simply Stuck' (01264 350788) produce iron or stick on labels.
please check that your child is wearing their own school clothes as a few named PE and sweatshirts have vanished.
If your child is unwell and cannot attend school it is vital that you contact the school on the first day of absence by 9.15am at the latest. Please phone or send a note in with a sibling or neighbour.
if you are going to be late to collect your child, please phone and, if there is room, we will accomodate them in 'Cool Kids Club' if applicable. At times the office is unstaffed, but we do have an answer machine, so you can leave a message.
The Governors have recently agreed two new revised policies, on the curriculum and school attendance. You can read them on www.swimbridge.ik.org:Features/Governors pages, along with other policies etc.
If your child has recently lost a silver cross and chain, please check in the school office.
This week, older children were treated to a mini-concert by our flute and fife players.
All children from Year 3 - 6 are able to have guitar or flute/fife lessons in school. If you wish your child to take up this great opportunity next term, please have a word with me. All children who do not take up these instruments will have recorder lessons next term.
Congratulations to the following children for completing Merit Cards :
Card 5 Hannah O'Brien
Card 6 Scott Ansell
Card 9 Scott Ackland, Laura Ackland
Card 12 Aimee Ansell, Isobel Comerford & Joshua Stoneman
Card 13 Bethany Vickery
Admission procedures (for Reception Children) to schools changed last year. Parents now have to complete admission forms and send them with their first and second choice of school to the County Council who will allocate places a term before the child starts. However, at Swimbridge School, parents can register their children at any time (this week we had a child who is only a few months old) and admission can be decided on immediately. If you know of any prospective parents, please let them know. Our own admission forms are available from the school office.
A few weeks ago I mentioned the Summer Holiday club operating at Sticklepath Primary School. You might be interested to know that Ladybirds in Landkey will be operating a similar club. Leaflets are available from ther school office, or phone 830118 for more information.
There will be an extra Games lesson on Tuesday morning next week for classes 3 and 4 and many of the older children will be involved in the South Molton area Netball/Football tournament on Wednesday.
Plans are currently being made for swimming next term - probably years 1 -4, and the following term probably Years 4 - 6; details next term.
In November the North Devon Performing Arts Festival will be held, open to Primary children. The speech and drama section looks particularly interesting. I have the 2006 syllabus in school or phone 01237 422603 for details.
Please note that as next week is the last week of term, there will be no music lessons (flute/fife, guitars or recorder) or computer club.

Weekly Newsletter No 21
Friday 30th June 2006
Dear Parents,
The highlight for many this week was our school sports followed by cream teas on Tuesday afternoon. It was nice to have the support of so many parents and grandparents. As usual the children's behaviour was very good and many parents commented on the sensible and responsible attitude of our older pupils who organised their teams so admirably. A special thanks to those who helped, especially Mrs Beechey.
Many thanks for your support in collecting Tesco Computers for Schools vouchers. With help from our many friends all over the Country (including Kings College Prep.School in Cambridge and Swimbridge Post Office) we have collected the staggering total of 23,700 which represents £237,000 spent!! We can still accept Tesco vouchers and 'bank' them for next year.
Many thanks to those who kindly responded to our Cool Kids or New Parents questionnaires. A few arrived after the deadline when results were analysed, but we have been very pleased with the findings which are attached.
We hope you found your child(ren)'s report informative and useful. You know you can always book an after school appointment. You don't have to wait for a formal consultation. These sessions can be for parents to find out how their child is progressing with a chance to look at his/her work.
We have three more events coming up, one sporting, one musical, and one technological. On Wednesday morning 19th July, older children will be taking part in the area Netball and Football competition. At the time of writing teams have not been decided upon. As we would like to include as many children as possible, parents of Years 5 and 6 children are asked to complete and return the permission slip below.
On the morning of Wednesday 12th July, Classes 1 and 2 will be involved in the area Infant Music Festival at South Molton Community College. This is when children from the district join with others to sing together and perform to each other. Please would parents of Class 1 and 2 children complete and return the permission slip below.
On the same day all Year 6 children will be involved in a Technology Day also at South Molton Community College. This will be a practical day which sounds very exciting. Children will need a packed lunch on this occasion. Please complete and return the permission slip below.
All except 4 children have received their commemorative school mug. If your child has not received one, parents need to collect them from the school office by the end of next week. 15 school photographs are also still outstanding - please return the photograph or remittance as required.
The Jubilee Hall will hopefully be your family venue on Saturday afternoon for the Friends (PTA) Summer Fayre, commencing at 2.00pm The latest Friends Newsletter gives all the details. Who will be in the stocks this year? Help setting up in the Jubilee Hall from mid-morning onwards would be appreciated, as would help clearing up at the end.
This month's Headteachers Award goes to Ben Watson for his caring attitude to younger children around the school.
By the time you receive this letter parents of children in Years 2,3,4,5 and 6 should have received notification of your child's SAT results. SAT results are just one indication of how children are progressing. We are pleased with the results of the two statutory tests, at Years 2 and 6.
Our Year 6 SAT results in Maths and Science were, once again, in excess of national expectations; in English we matched the national requirement. We are especially pleased with our special needs children who have made exceptional progress - in some cases moving forward the equivalent of 6 years in 4 years. Level 4 is the expected Year 6 Level; level 5 is the expected level for 13/14 year olds.

Level 3 11%
Level 4 41%
Level 5 47%
Level 4 or above = 88%

Yesterday we were treated to an excellent concert by some of our guitar players, showing the great musical skills they have acquired. At Swimbridge, all children from Year 3 onwards learn a musical instrument at school. We ask that parents of current Year 2 children purchase a descant recorder (from Barnstaple Music Centre, Cross St or a similar outlet at approx. £4.50) ready for next September. Children in Years 3 to 6 can also learn guitars or flute/fife at school - just complete the form below and see me for further details. We assume that children already having guitar or flute/fife lessons will continue next term unless parents let us know this term.

Friday 23rd June 2006
Dear Parents,
ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONS
Next Monday 26th June, we will be celebrating our school's annniversary.
At 1.15 - 2.00pm everyone is invited to our Church service. This gives us an opportunity to give thanks for 140 years of service to the community. During the service we have invited 4 ex-pupils and ex-staff to tell us some of their special memories.
Following the service, all children, and our 'special guests' (ex-pupils and staff 70 years old or older) will be going to the Jubilee Hall for a special anniversary tea. We ask that parents send suitable party food and drink (sandwiches, cakes, crisps, fruit etc, but no fizzy please) to the school office on the morning. Offers of help organising the food and washing up are always very welcome, please let Mrs Ford, Mrs Newnham or Mrs Squire know if you can help.
At about 2.50pm we will be having some children's entertainment by John Surman, a local actor who has appeard on many T.V. programmes. Following this we will be distributing anniversary mugs to the parents of all children, so parents are invited to join us at about 3.10pm, although it will be rather crowded.
On this occasion all children will go home from the Jubilee Hall. Children going to Cool Kids Club will be collected by Club staff and taken back to school.
We plan to finish as near to 3.15pm as possible, but please bear with us if we overrun slighly.
There will be no recorder lessons on Monday.
Our special guests will have the opportunity to look around school following the events in the Jubilee Hall
There is a small school history exhibition in the entrance porch which you might find interesting.
As a special anniversary bonus we are able to provide a FREE school meal for ALL children on Monday. This is partly to encourage children who don't normally have school meals to try them. The menu on Monday will be :
West Country Sausages in onion gravy
or
Broccoli and Potato Bake
New Potatoes
Green Beans, fresh carrots
Salad Bar selection
Custard biscuit, milk shake
Yoghurt or fruit
We will assume all children will be taking up this free offer, unless they bring a packed lunch.
Congratulations to these swimmers :
Well done to these children for completing merit cards for good work and behaviour
Please find attached the latest revised list of term dates. This is basically the same as the February edition, but corrects a couple of minor errors in 2008.
All families should be receiving a copy of the latest school photograph. There is no obligation to purchase, but they do make great souvenirs for future years.
School reports will hopefully be with you at the end of next week. Parent/teacher consultations are planned for late afternoon/early evening on Wednesday 5th July, but don't forget you are always welcome to book an after-school appointment with your child's class teacher.
Don't forget :
Summer Fayre Saturday 8th July
Sports Day Tuesday 4th July
At Swimbridge School we constantly strive to provide the best possible education for all of our children. Last year a questionnaire was sent to all parents and this showed that you were very happy with what we are trying to do. A few minor issues cropped up and these were considered and, where applicable, improvements were made. This year we are sending questionnaires to the parents of all new children, and parents of children who regularly use Cool Kids Club. If you receive a questionnaire we would be grateful if you could complete it and return it to me by next Wednesday please. Thank you for your help in this.

Thursday 15th June 2006
Dear Parents,
I am sure you don't need reminding that school is closed for the day tomorrow, Friday 16th June. I hope the weather will be sunny for you, while teachers are working inside on their assignments!
Cool Kids Club will be open tomorrow from 8.30am to 5.30pm. A few spaces are still available for childre, so long as they are booked in advance.
Next Wednesday will be themed 'Recycle Day', when children throughout the school will be considering this importannt concept.
School's 140th birthday celebrations - Monday 26th June. Following a church service at 1.15pm (to which everyone is invited) we plan to go to the Jubilee Hall for a celebration tea. As for the Christmas Parties, we ask that parents send suitable 'party food and drink' (sandwiches, cakes, crisps, fruit etc but no fizzy please) to the school office on the morning. Offers of help organising the food and washing up are always very welcome, please let Mrs Ford, Mrs Newnham or Mrs Squire know if you can help. On this occasion children will need to be collected from the Jubilee Hall unless they are staying for Cool Kids Club, who will collect the children and take them back to school. We have invited older ex-pupils (over 70 years old) to join us for the service and tea and then to view the school after the children have gone home.
On this afternoon we hope to give all children a souvenir mug, courtesy of the Friends Association. These are rather fragile so we will be physically handing them to parents when they collect their children.
Sports Day is planned for Tuesday 4th July (pm)
Parent Interviews are planned for Wednesday 5th July (after school and early evening). Reports will be with you approximately 1 week earlier.
Our School Friends Association (PTA) Summer Fayre will be held on Saturday 8th July (during the afternoon). PLease book this date!
In the future we may be able to run our Cool Kids Club during the summer. This summer, however, Rachel Vines, our Cool Kids leader, will be helping organise a playscheme at Sticklepath School - our children will be able to join in. We have leaflets in the office if you require further details.
On 24th and 25th June there is a free Creepy Crawley weekend from 11.00am to 4.00pm at Trelawney Garden Centre, Ashford.
Our Tag Rugby teams did well in this week's tournament, getting through to the quarter finals
We also had a visit from Exmoor Zoo's education officer and some of their animals, courtesy of the Friends Association.
Many thanks for all the Tesco and Sainsbury's vouchers. We need a few more if possible. Currently we have 12,00 Tesco vouchers and 7,500 from Sainsbury.
You might be interested to know that the Sunday Times will be including us in their Parent Power CD-Rom, which follows our entry into the national 'Good Schools Guide'.

Friday 26th May 2006
Dear Parents,
Yu will already know that we are closed for the half term holiday next week. We are also closed for a staff only day on Friday 16th June, when Cool Kids Club WILL be operating all day from 8.30am to 5.30pm. Parents do need to book their children in for this day either for the morning, afternoon, or all day. Further details and booking forms can be obtained from the school office.
The 27 Year 5 and 6 children who went on the Paignton Residential had a great time. Throughout the week their good behaviour was commented upon by those we met. A special thanks must go to Trisha Ford and Michaela Squire who gave up their week to make this visit possible.
I'm sure you join with me in sending our commiserations to the family of Pam Hutchings who died just a few days ago. Until 2002, Pam had been a meal time assistant at our school for 25 years. She was well liked by generations of children and will be sadly missed in the community. The family have generously asked that donations in lieu of flowers should come to our school. Swimbridge School obviously meant so much to Pam.
On Monday 26th June we plan to celebrate the school's 140th anniversary with a church service and anniversary tea for the children. We will be inviting ex-pupils over 70 years old to these events, so please make this day well known. If you know of any older ex-pupils, please let me know so that we can invite them. Currently we know of 93 and 95 year olds.
We plan to give each pupil an anniversary mug to mark our school's birthday. We are selling a specially-written book 'School Heritage', which, in it's 98 pages. tells the story of our school, as seen through the annals of the school log books. These are available at £7 per copy from the School Office, while stocks last!!
Thanks to everyone who has already given us Tesco and Sainsbury's schools vouchers. With many still to come, I understand we currently have 8,000 Tesco and 5,000 Sainsbury vouchers. More are welcome!
Parents of Year 6 children should have been informed by their respective secondary schools about induction days :
Park Tue 27th June
South Molton Wed 28th June
Parents are responsible for arranging transport etc. on these occasions. Please contact the secondary school direct for more information.
Computer Club re-starts on Tuesday 13th June for Years 4,5 and 6 from 3.15 to 4.00pm. This will be on a first-come, first-served basis for the first 20 children who bring a note from their parents.
The Government has made pupil attendance at school a top priority. We do not encourage family holidays in term time, but realise that it may occasionally be necessary. If this is the case, please collect a 'Holiday Form' from the school office, and return it completed. A maximum of 10 days per school year can be authorised if a child's general attendance is usually good. However, please consider the learning that will be missed.
On Tuesday 13th June, two Y5/6 Tag Rugby teams will be participating in the North Devon Tournament; details later, and on Wednesday 14th June our Friends Association (PTA) is covering the cost of a visit by Exmoor Zoo staff and animals to our school.
Swimming continues on Fridays for years 3 - 6. Next term, swimming at South Molton pool is planned for Years 2 - 4, with further sessions during the Spring term.

A special thanks to everyone for your support and help this term.
We had an enjoyable 'farewell'evening for Janet Ferris on Tuesday. Janet would like to thank everyone for attending and for the leaving gift of 'Monsoon' vouchers.

Dear Parents,
A special thanks to everyone for your support and help this term.
We had an enjoyable 'farewell'evening for Janet Ferris on Tuesday. Janet would like to thank everyone for attending and for the leaving gift of 'Monsoon' vouchers.
If your child is learning a musical instrument please encourage him/her to practise each day. Equally important - please make sure your child continues to read on a daily basis. Support with your child's Easter homework (if applicable) is very valuable.
Children learning guitar and flute at school will be bringing home a letter concerning booking for next terms lessons and payment. Please note that you will need to deal with this over the Easter holidays.
We close this afternoon for the Easter Holiday and re-open on Monday 24th April. As always, Cool Kids Club is open every school day until 5.30pm, but you do need to book a place.
A reminder that :
