Dear Parents,

I am sure you join with me in wishing Janet Ferris good luck in her seconded role as a Primary Strategy Consultant for the County. As previously mentioned, Catherine McVeigh will become Class 3s teacher.

Don?t forget Saturdays Easter Egg hunt at Tordown Farm, commencing at 3pm.

This is an important time for Year 6 children as they prepare for their SATs in May. There are still copies of the Science and Maths revision books available from the school office; English revision notes have been given out today.

We do appreciate the support and encouragement parents give their children with homework assignments. Please encourage your child to read on a daily basis over the Easter holidays.

Lost property is always being found! Often it has no name! One of our new pupils has lost a new, named sweatshirt within a couple of days of starting school. Please check your childs clothing.

I am pleased to announce that Mrs Catherine McVeigh will be Class 3?s new teacher next term, while Mrs Ferris is seconded as a Primary Strategy Consultant for Literacy. Two more important dates : School Disco Wednesday 23rd March
Easter Egg Hunt 26th March

Last week we had a visit from the Chairs of the County Council and the Education Committee. I received a nice letter from Mike Knight (DCC Chair) who wrote:

?John and I would like to thank you for receiving us at your school yesterday. We both found it interesting to see how such an old building could be developed into a learning environment fit for the 21st century! Please pass on our thanks to the Governors and staff for all the hard work they are doing for your pupils.?

If your child is in Year 6 you will already have been informed about the Science booster sessions on Mondays. We hope your Year 6 child will be able to stay until 3.45pm each Monday afternoon. Science and Maths study books are for sale in the office; suggestions about writing revision will hopefully be sent out before the end of term.

For your information the following amounts have been sent to:

Action Aid £370 (Tsunami Relief)
Comic Relief £68.50

Thank you all for your kind donations.

Next term, we will be continuing with our Music Tuition. If we do not hear from you to the contrary, we will assume that you wish your child to carry on with his/her lessons. We will be sending out invoices towards the end of April. In the meantime, could we please remind parents that tuition fees for this term should be paid before the end of term.

We re-open next term on Monday 11th April.

Dear Parents,

This has been a very busy week. We have been visited by the Chairmen of Devon County Council and the County Education Committee (who both expressed delight at our schools achievements and the behaviour of the children they met); the childrens librarian to present the Inter-school book quiz shield to our champion team, and the installation of Interactive Whiteboards in classrooms. The latter is causing some disruption but hopefully this will be worthwhile in the end.

At last Wednesdays PTA meeting a number of exciting events were planned, so please book these dates:
Wed 23rd March Disco in the Jubilee Hall
Sat 25th March Easter Egg Hunt at Tordown Farm
Fri 13th May Quiz Night in the Jubilee Hall
Fri 1st July Summer Fayre in the Jubilee Hall
Sat 12th Nov Barn Dance

Year 6 parents will receive an important letter today about preparation for the forthcoming SAT?s

Please check your childs hair for head lice this weekend (they should be easy to spot ? they will be bright red!!!!)

If you are offered any of these vouchers during your shopping expeditions, please accept them for our school. This year we are again aiming to collect 13,000 vouchers for a Tesco computer for school. We are also collecting Sainsbur?s Active Kids vouchers.

DVDs of Scrooge and the Christmas Fayre are now in school. They are being distributed to those who ordered them. If you don?t receive your copy by mid-week, please see Mrs Wadsworth.

Next term there will be a change in our teaching staff as Mrs Ferris has been seconded to the post of Primary National Strategy Consultant for Literacy. We are currently in the process of appointing a high calibre teacher to replace her ? details shortly.

Congratulations to Madeleine Mansell and Shannon Straughan for achieving a silver award for reading 20 books for Bookworms

Attached is a questionnaire about our proposed after-school Stay and Play club, from September. Please consider this and return it even if you are not planning to use the facility. Pupils will have their own questionnaire at school next week

If you have any concerns about your child at school, please book an after school appointment with the teacher.

Dear Parents,

Wonderful news! Our school has won the annual World Book Day Inter-school quiz. This years team of Samuel Heard (Year 4), Caitlin OBrien (Year 5) and Sarah Spencer (Year 6) beat all the other schools to win the shield, and £50 of Ottakers Vouchers. Congratulations to this years team.

To celebrate World Book Day you, and your family, are invited to try the attached questions from the inter-school quiz. Please return the questions sheet and win a certificate of merit for your family.

Special congratulations to Gemma Hayter, nominated this week for the Headteachers Award by 3 children for being helpful to others, specially the younger children.

Next Friday is Comic Relief Day. To mark this, and to raise funds for this good cause, we plan to hold a non-uniform day ? children can pay 50p, as long as they wear something RED. In addition, if children wish, we will spray red shapes on to their hair. This will cost 50p per shape. This should be an exciting day.

Please note : There will be a PTA meeting next Tuesday 8th March, at 8.00pm in the Jack Russell.

Friday 25th February 2005
Dear Parents,

We continue to look into ways of providing after school care. It looks like we may be able to obtain some funding to help with this. Our next step is to form a steering committee of parents, staff and governors; we would like up to two parents to join us in helping plan this exciting new venture. If you are interested please let me know as soon as possible so that we can invite you to our next extended schools meeting on Thursday morning, 3rd March. We also hope to advertise shortly for after school supervisors. Please consider whether you, or a friend, may be interested; training will be available.

School uniform items are available from Samuel Dawes, and National Schoolwear in Barnstaple. However, we now have a new provider, Brigade Schoolwear, who operate via mail order. If you are likely to need sweatshirts etc in the near future, please call into the office to place an order with Mrs Wadsworth (you may also view a sample).

DVDs of Scrooge should be with us early in March for those who ordered them.

EARLY NOTICE Easter Service 24th March at 9.30am.

School lunches represent very good value for money at £7.25 per week, or £34.80 for the current half term.

Can I remind you that children should not arrive at school before 8.45 am, as there is no supervision before this time.

Please could parents make sure that children bring their drinks to school in a bottle that they are able to open and close. Small children find it quite difficult to manage ordinary screw top bottles, a sports top would be easier.

Dont forget the production of Burglar Bill at the Jubilee Hall next Friday 4th March. Tickets are available from Julie Whitton, telephone 830311

When we return Recorder lessons will be held on Monday afternoons, as our current swimming sessions will have come to an end.

We have successfully covered the Indian Ocean map with 20p pieces and raised a total of £370 . This will be passed on to Action Aid to help with their relief work. Added to this total will be the sum of £20.50 raised at Mrs Beecheys family group sale. The sale raised a grand total of £41. 12, the balance of £20.62 will add to our collection for our two sponsored children, Atilat and Abaagri.

On Friday 25th February, Class 4 will be visiting the Queens Theatre for the Highly Strung classical concert. Any remaining £5 contributions should be in school before that date.

Congratulations to Alexandra Haydn-Higgins who has been nominated for the Headteachers Award because of her dedication to her school family group, showing great organisation and helpfulness.

If you feel you can offer your time and expertise to help young people learn a new skill, we would be delighted to hear from you. Dear Parents,

Dont forget our after-school bookshop will be open on from Wednesday 2nd February to Tuesday 8th February. Children will have the opportunity to preview this during school time. Parents can purchase books after school. I attach a leaflet with further details.

We still welcome responses to our extended schools survey. If there is sufficient demand from parents, we will do our best to make this dream a reality.

Our covering of the Indian Ocean with 20p pieces is doing very well - can you help us complete it.

Please pay dinner money regularly ? either termly, half termly or on the first day of each school week.

Book club orders need to be in on Monday 31st January please.

The next PTA Quiz Night will be held on Friday 11th February in the Jubilee Hall. Teams of up to 6 are welcome.

More dressing up clothes are needed for lunch time activities. Hats, coats, jackets, trousers ? all will be gratefully received.

A video of the Christmas production of Scrooge has been produced. This has been filmed and edited by Mr Mansbridge (Tom and Billys grandad) We are now looking for someone with facilities to copy this onto video or DVD. Any offers of help would be appreciated so that we can make further copies available to parents to buy.

If you have any problems about your child in school, please book an after school appointment.

Dear Parents,

Can I remind you that if you are at all interested in after school child care (extended schools), the questionnaire on last week?s newsletter needs to be returned. A further copy is attached.

Class 4 have been booked to attend a classical concert by Sinfonietta South West at the Queens Theatre on Friday 25th February. This is an important part of the class music curriculum this term and we would like everyone to take part. So far the parents of a dozen children have not returned the slip ? please do so by Monday.

Our collection of 20ps to cover the map pf the Indian Ocean is doing well ? we just need some more please!

The Local Education Authority is about to change the way children are admitted to schools. This seems rather complicated and could result in parents not knowing whether their child will be admitted to the school of their choice until about a term before they are due to start. I know that a number of parents would like their children to come to Swimbridge School, and so I would ask you to let prospective parents know that to be guaranteed a place, they need to complete an application form very soon; this also applies to brothers and sisters with older siblings already in the school. Application forms are available from the school office.

Photographs of the school production of Scrooge are still available on the website ww.postme.co.uk/scrooge. This offer will only be available for a further 2 weeks, and all proceeds will go the PTA.

Dear Parents,
Many thanks for responding to last weeks questionnaire about extended schools. These results will be carefully considered and if there is sufficient demand, we should be able to apply for additional funding to help provide some after-school child-care. You will realise that we are just investigating the possibility at this stage. In addition to last weeks survey, I would be grateful if you could fill in and return the slip below.

Congratulations to the following children for completing Merit Cards:
Card 1 Simon Bushen, Travis Lovell, Megan Rippin and Laura Trawin
Card 2 Haydon Vickery
Card 3 Charlie Thompson, Catriona Wetherill-S and Lauren Slape
Card 4 Peter Dawson and Bethany Hill
Card 6 Saskia Beer and Olivia Rippin
Card 7 Danny Lakeman and Jocie Dyer
Card 8 Samuel Whitton
Card 9 Melissa Vellacott
Card 11 Madeleine Mansell, Alex H-Higgins and Isobel Comerford
Card 12 Bethany Vickery
Card 14 Luke Hynes

Congratulations also to Bryony Newnham and Jules Davies for gaining the Bronze Award for Bookworms

On Tuesday next we start Maths Club from 3.30 to 4.20pm. This is for all Year 6 pupils. Besides broadening their mathematical experience, we hope that it will help prepare them for their SAT tests in May. This should be an enjoyable occasion, and to this end parents have usually taken it in turns to provide a drink and snack for the group; a rota is on the class door.

I understand that some of the photos taken during our production of Scrooge are available for purchase. These can be seen on postme.co.uk/scrooge.html and ordered online, or direct from Stephanie Dyer. 7 x 5 prints cost 60p, and the larger panorama group photos cost £1.

I heard today from the Diocesan Property Services that the Diocese (who own the Glebe Field opposite the school) has appointed external consultants to enter into detailed discussions with the council. The objective is to designate this land as a playing field and site for a new school, should funding ever be available.

There will be a PTA meeting on Monday 17th January at 8.00pm at 1 Steep Close (Emma Dawsons house). Please try to attend.

Our Tsunami appeal, covering the Indian Ocean map with 20p pieces in doing very well. We are about half way there in one week. More coins will be very welcome.

Mrs Beechey would be grateful if you would send into school any brightly-coloured carrier bags you may have at home (not ordinary supermarket bags, please)

G D Reed
Headteacher

Please complete and return as soon as possible if you are interested. There is no commitment at this stage.
 I would be interested in my child/ren being involved in the ?extended school? day after school.
 Ideally, I would like to make use of this for ______ days per week.

Friday 7th January 2005
Dear Parents,

Welcome back to the spring term. As always, if you have any concerns about your child at school, please book an after school appointment with your child?s teacher.

Swimming re-starts on Monday afternoons (please note the change of day) from this Monday 10th January until half term, for classes 3 and 4. Recorder lessons will be on Tuesdays. Flute lessons continue on Wednesdays, with Brass and Guitars on Thursdays. Maths club for Year 6 will run after school (3.35 ? 4.20pm) from Tuesday 18th January.

We have all been saddened by the Indian Ocean Tsunami. I am sure that many will have donated already, but we feel if would be good if we gave the children an opportunity to contribute as well. To this end, we have produced a large map of the Indian Ocean. Children, parents, grandparents. Staff and governors will be invited to place 20p pieces over the ocean. For safety, the map will be kept in Class 4 and will provide a focus during assemblies. Maybe children might be given a job at home to earn 20ps to put on the map. There is also an opportunity to donate blankets, bedding, clothing and homewares on Wednesday afternoon and Saturday mornings at the Jubilee Hall-see the poster overleaf.

Advance Notice? we plan to hold a Bookfair in school from Thursday 3rd February to Wednesday 9th February.

Parents of children in Class 4 should receive their termly information sheet about the work being covered with this letter.

On Friday 25th February Devon Music Services is sponsoring a highly strung classical concert at the Queens Theatre ? an introduction to Classical Music for Years 5 and 6. This becomes part of the music curriculum focus for the term. The cost of the concert (which includes coach travel) is just £5 per child. We hope every child in Class 4 will be able to attend. If you are happy with this arrangement, please complete the form below and return as soon as possible ? no later than 21st January.

Attached is a letter about extended schools. Please read this and return the questionnaire to Mrs Wadsworth by 10th January. It is possible that we might get some financial assistance to provide after school facilities.

Can I remind you of the importance of children having a healthy snack at morning break. KS1 children all have fruit?it is fairer and healthier if older children have something similar.

There are still a few Scrooge C.D.s available to purchase?please see Mrs Wadsworth in the office if you would like one. Please could any outstanding payments be made for C.D.s and Calendars purchased before Christmas.

Since Harvest the school has been collecting towards our Action Aid sponsorship of Atilat Abaagri and Sanjay Singh who live in Ghana and India. Dear Parents,

On Monday afternoon we will be holding our school party, for all children, in the Jubilee Hall. As in past years, we ask that every child brings crisps, fruit, cakes, squash, sandwiches or whatever, which will be shared out for the party tea. Children can, if they wish, change out of school uniform. A few children are providing cabaret entertainment during the afternoon.Children will take their school bags to the Hall with them, and should be collected from the Hall at 3.30pm. A few parental helpers (for the tea) would be helpful.

The response to our Christmas Concert on Wednesday and Thursday has been very enthusiastic. Thanks go to all of you who have helped with costumes, props, learning lines etc, and to the staff whose hard work made the events take place. Special congratulations to the children who did so well!! You can still order copies of the C.D. from Mrs Wadsworth in the Office, or by returning the slip below. school calendars can still be ordered as well. It is still not too late to book Christmas dinner for your child/ren. Please return the slip on Monday if you wish to do so.

On Thursday 16th December we will be holding our school Carol Service in the Parish Church from 6.30 to 7.30pm. We ask that all children attend in school uniform please; everyone is welcome. Didnt the Jubilee Hall look spectacular for last Fridays Victorian PTA Fayre. Over £900 was raised. THANK YOU!!

You know that we offer a range of musical tuition in school ? flutes/fife, brass and guitar. We assume that all children will continue with their lessons next term unless parents inform us to the contrary, in writing, by the end of term. You will realise that we employ peripatetic teachers for guitars and flute/fife, and we must inform them in good time if there are any changes. The same applies to French Club.

The Swimbridge Twinning Association is interested in encouraging children and adults to visit Ste Honorine Du Fay, in France, on their visit during May half term. To this end they are offering a reduced fare to oiur school pupils, if acoompanied by an adult. Phone Margaret Pidler (01271 373684). There is a letter on the schools external notice board.

Friday 26th November 2004
Dear Parents,

As we approach the end of term (Friday 17th December) things are certainly hotting up.

Tonight we have our PTA Fayre in the Jubilee Hall from 5.30 to 7.30pm. A tremendous thank you to all those kind people who have worked so hard to make this happen. I am just sorry that I am not able to attend myself this year.

Next week we present our Christmas Concert, again in the Jubilee Hall. Performances will be on Wednesday, commencing at 1.20pm, and on Thursday at 6.30pm. We estimate that the performances will take about 90 minutes so on Wednesday children, whose parents are present, will be dismissed early from the Hall, if applicable.

We have had a lot of support with our concert and we are grateful for this. This may not be the most polished performance in the world, but the children have certainly enjoyed preparing for it! We endeavour to involve all children, and you will see that KS1?s performance of Mary?s Precious Boy is embedded within the older children?s production of Scrooge. The compact disc of all of the songs from the production will be available within a week or so (before the end of term), a sample copy has already arrived. All children are included (and named) in this recording ? it would make a superb gift for Christmas and a great souvenir. We have ordered 90 copies initially, so it will be first come, first served. Please complete the form below so that we could send you your copies as soon as they arrive. One copy is £6, further copies will be £5.25 each.

School calendars are also available to order from the school office. The cost is £3.00 each. Please come in and have a look at the inspection copy.

You have already received a note about the school Christmas dinner on Wednesday 15th December. If your child does not normally have school lunches these must be preordered and prepaid please.

Please note that there will be no further computer clubs this term; we hope to continue next term as usual when we start Maths club on Fridays after school for Year 6.

Congratulations to the following swimmers for their achievements :
Nathan Singh 3 mtrs
Nicholas Bushen 12 mtrs
Timon Hynes 15 mtrs
Aidan W-Sallis 400 mtrs
Bryony Newnham 500 mtrs
Joshua H-Higgins 500 mtrs
Alec Smith 500 mtrs
James Groombridge 600 mtrs
Sam Whitton 600 mtrs
Luke Hynes 800 mtrs
Sarah Spencer 920 mtrs

If you have any concerns about any school matters, please see your childs teacher or myself. Just book an appointment.

A Polite reminder : Please do not park on the yellow zig-zag lines outside the school.
