25th March 2004

Dear Parents,
We close for the Easter Holidays on Friday 2nd April, and re-open on Monday 19th April.

Tomorrow Class 3 are traveling to Bath as part of their Roman History work. They need to be in school by 8.35am, and they are due to arrive back at approx. 5.15pm.

There will be Maths Club as usual after school tomorrow and next Friday, the last day of term.

Our Tesco Computers for Schools Vouchers collection is doing well. The total now stands at 1,700. All classes have computers supplied by this scheme; please help us gain another.

Next Thursday 1st April, Class 4 will be taking part in a Biosphere Awareness Conference at North Devon College. This should be a stimulating day, which will heighten childrens? awareness of the world in which we live. There is no charge for this event, although a donation of £2.00 per child towards the coach fare would be appreciated. Please return the slip below. Children should wear their school uniform, and have a packed lunch, We will return to school around 3.30pm.

Children at our school certainly seem to enjoy school meals which represent good value for money. From next term the cost of a two-course meal will be £1.45, an increase of 5p.

Plans are well advanced for the Year 5/6 residential trip to Paignton Zoo. The balance of the cost for those who have paid the full £40 deposit, is £115.00. We would be grateful if this amount could be sent into the school office by 30th April (cheques payable to Devon County Council please). More information soon.

We will be holding our Easter Service in the Parish Church on Wednesday 31st March, at 9.30am. While this is designed for children, parents and friends are welcome to attend.

Mrs Helen Durrant has been connected with this school for about 20 years as a parent, Governor, PTA Officer and, for the last decade, as a music and recorder teacher. Sadly for our school, Helen is retiring to set up a Traidcraft Fairtrade shop (in Bear Street) - I?m sure she will welcome your custom. We all thank Helen for her dedication to our school over the years. Staff are collecting for a retirement gift; parents and Governors are invited to add to this?please send any donation either tomorrow or Monday 29th March.

Thank you to those who came to Cascades last Friday evening. You will be pleased to know that we have now raised the £400 we need for our two sponsored children, Atilat and Sanjay.

Children in Years 5/6 should have brought home the latest Paignton Residential Week letter, and children in our Reception Year should have brought home an invitation to an informal open evening on Thursday 4th March at 3.30pm for a chat and a cup of tea. We hope to hold a crèche.

We try to offer a broad and balanced curriculum, and to this end Class 4 have been invited to the former Ayers and Grimshaw premises on Braunton Road on 10th March, as part of our links with Devon Education Business Partnership, to learn more about the building trade. They will have the chance to buld a wall! This should be a hugely enjoyable experience. Health and Safety will be of paramount importance, and we ask that children have sturdy shoes (Wellington Boots are acceptable) and wear overalls or old play clothes which are expendable. There will be a high level of supervision.

Dear Parents,
After a busy first half of term we close this afternoon for the half term holiday. School reopens on Monday February 23rd.

Flute lessons will take place on Tuesdays next term as we have a new teacher, Victoria Cain.

Earlier this week Class 4 undertook their pilgrimage to Exeter Cathedral. Their behaviour and enthusiasm was praised by Cathedral staff and visitors to the cathedral alike; even the coach driver told staff the children were a credit to the school. Besides learning about the cathedral and how pilgrimages operated in the past a short service was arranged. The children processed to this from the main door singing beautifully, without musical accompaniment, much to the enjoyment and surprise of other visitors. I am sure that this is a day they will long remember.

Can we remind you of the value of reading to, reading with, and
listening to your child read on a regular basis at home. This,
along with support with homework assignments, can greatly
encourage your child and enhance his / her learning.

Please watch out for Tesco Computer Vouchers
for Schools. We will be collecting these once again.

Dear Parents,

Dont forget Friday evenings Quiz Night in the Jubilee Hall commencing at 7.30pm. Our PTA is a wonderful fund raiser having very recently paid for a new colour T.V., £500 worth of books, and so much more!

Following our parents meeting for the Paignton Residential week, a deposit of £40 can now be sent (cheques please, payable to Devon County Council). These should be sent to the school office by 13th February. The balance (approx. £115) will need to be paid by midApril please. There will be a further meeting within a few weeks to give parents more information.

FOR YOUR INFORMATION
Ø Cascades booked for all Swimbridge School families and friends on Friday 19th March
Ø Flute Guitar lessons with Devon Youth Music for next term need to be booked by 27th February.
Ø We are happy to announce that we have appointed Denise Brocklehurst and Bridget Vellacott as Meal Time Assistants.

Next Year the Freedom of Information Act comes into force. Each school will need a policy and procedure for making sure that all information (except personal information) is available to the public. Our draft policy is on our web site (in the features section) for governors and parents to consider prior to our next governors meeting your comments are welcome. Interestingly almost all of the information we hold is accessible anyway, so there should be no major change for our school.

POLITE REMINDER
There are a few families who have not yet returned the permission slip/payment for the Exeter Pilgrimage Trip. Please do so as soon as possible. Thankyou.

For an interesting photo of our sets of twins, see the web site (News Section)

Our school seems to feature in the press, radio and t.v. a lot at the moment. This week we are on the front of the ND Journal, as apparently, we are unique in that almost all of our staff (9 in all) are qualified crossing patrol wardens to enable our children to be safer on the roads.

We are working towards all children who have a snack during the morning break having something healthy. Children in KS1 already have this, and we hope that by Autumn this will be extended to include older children.

Please would parents of KS1 children remind them that they should not bring toy cars etc into school.

Dear Parents,

The Christmas Party season is upon us, and KS1 will be having their party on Thursday 11th December in the Jubilee Hall. Children should be collected from there at 3.30pm please. On Monday 15th December, the same arrangements will apply for KS2. On both occasions, we ask that children bring suitable food and drink on the morning of the party to the school office. This will be shared out for the party tea. A few volunteers would be appreciated to help with the tea ? please see the Class Teachers if you can help.

On Tuesday 16th December, we will be holding our Christmas Carol Service in the Parish Church. This is timed at 6.00pm until approximately 7.15, so that all parents have the opportunity to be present. We very much hope that all children will be attending; in school uniform please, unless they are dressed in nativity costume.

Our new-style 2004 Calendars are now available. At only £2.00 each (£5.00 for 3) they make great gifts for grandparents, and are vital for each family, containing, as they do, all term dates, national dates, quotes from the school log books, self-portraits and birthday days of all children.

We also have some copies of our CD ?Hosanna Rock? and ?New Millennium Heroes? which make ideal gifts especially for grandparents, aunties and uncles. For the Christmas period only these are available at £4.00 each.
