9 Nov 2003 - Wartime memories

We recently welcomed some Commandos, from Chivenor, to our school to speak to our younger children about Remembrance. They reminded the children about the soldiers, sailors and airmen who died or were injured protecting our country.

Years 5 and 6 also interviewed Berwick Coates, an evacuated ex pupil at our school in 1941. He told us many fascinated things about home and school life 60 years ago. Berwick's life long favourite book (The Wind in the Willows) was read to him while he was a 7 year old at Swimbridge and he was introduced to a love of History here as well - and Berwick spent 40 years being a history teacher! He even taught the parents of some of the present Swimbridge pupils. He recently has had another book published, called Wellington's Charge, a portrait of the Duke of Wellington.

Years 5 and 6 wrote diary entries as if they were the young Berwick on his first day at this school, on January 6th 1941. This was part of their History and Literacy work.
