Dear Parents,
Many of you will have seen todays Western Morning News. According to Ofsted and the DfES, the children at our school have made more progress between KS1 and KS2 than in any other school in the South West of England. This is startling news and very encouraging.
Saturday is our PTA Christmas Fayre. You will already have received a comprehensive letter about this. The hall will be open from 12.20, and we hope lots of people will be available then and afterwards, to help set up and clear the hall. The funds the PTA raises enhances education at our school, so please come and spend your money.
Amongst other things, we are in need of :
· Cakes
· More cakes
· Raffle prizes
· Tombola
· More cakes
· Teddy bears (washed please)
· Books in good condition
· Christmas Decorations
· These can be brought into school tomorrow, or to the Jubilee Hall on Saturday.
Dontforget the Jam Jars made into a lantern competition for children.
Towards the end of the Fayre (around 3.30 pm) we intend to hold the final of the school talent competition. Children will be told who has got through to this stage by Friday, and a list of those children will appear on the notice board.
Can I remind parents that dinner money (currently £1.40 per day, £7.00 per week) should come into school on the first day of each week, or better still, paid monthly or half termly. Although we prefer children to have lunches all the week, a few children have them occasionally. It is vital that your child knows whether or not he or she is having a school lunch, and lets the teacher know this when the register is called. (I realise this sounds ridiculous, but believe me, we do have some children who dont now if they are having a packed lunch or a school meal!!) Please also bear in mind that if your child arrives late at school, and requires a school meal, then you must come to the office and let Mrs Wadsworth know so that she can inform the Kitchen Manager.
School Christmas dinner will be on Wednesday 10th December, and we encourage all children to have this. Please complete the slip below if you would like to book a meal for your child. We will assume regular dinner children will have Christmas Dinner unless we are informed otherwise.
Our Christmas Carol Service on Tuesday 16th December will feature the new musical production of Mary, Mary. In the meantime at 2pm on Friday 12th December in the Jubilee Hall, the KS1 classes invite their parents and classes 3 and 4 to see their presentation Fishing for Stars .The preparation of this musical play has been part of our Speaking and Listening element for the Autumn Term. Please come and enjoy it with your child.
Congratulations to these children for completing stamp cards for good work and behaviour :
Card 5 Timon Hynes, Hayden Eaton
Card 6 Dylan Vickery
Card 8 Georgina Comerford
Card 9 Ellie Mansfield, Bethany Vickery,
Amy Lane
Card 10 Corena Balment, Joshua Stoneman
Card 11 Myles Palmer, Rebecca Snell
Card 15 Colin Tucker, Richard Tucker
Please can I remind parents who have not yet done so to return their Data Collection sheets, amended as necessary. It is very important that we have the most up to date information. We have also not yet received Swimming donations from several families.
Please note that Guitar lessons ended for this term this week. The next lesson will be on 14th January 2004.

Some of the older children are currently reading a novel by the author Michael Morpurgo, who will be in North Devon on Saturday 6th December (between 11am and 12.00 midday) signing books and meeting readers, at R.M.Young (Booksellers) in South Molton.
We are currently awaiting the full report of the recent Ofsted this should be with us in mid-December. Governors and Staff have had an oral feedback and are most encouraged by it. A summary will be issued to parents and the press as soon as it is available. A summary of the Religious Education Inspection has already been circulated to parents.
Our Thrift Shop is a valuable resource. If you have any out-grown school clothing surplus to requirements, we would be happy to make them available to other families. Please call at the school office if you have any items to buy or sell.
We are becoming concerned about the number of children late for school every morning, and parents who collect their children late each evening. Can I remind you that children should be in school before 9.00am each morning. Parents need to be on site to collect children before they leave at 3.30pm please. Unfortunately, a number of children are regularly still at school 15 minutes, or more, after this time; some quite often for 30 minutes! We have had children left at school until almost 5.00pm. After school, teachers have school clubs to run, meetings to attend and preparation and marking to do. At our school, teachers are usually by the gate after school, but cannot be responsible for children unless parents have contacted school to inform us of an emergency delay. We understand that because secondary schools now finish earlier than we do, some parents collect older children first. However, older children are more able to look after themselves than primary children (who often get upset if left waiting) we feel that primary children ought to be collected first. Thank you to the 95% of parents who are here to collect children on time, every day!
Congratulations to :
RICHARD TUCKER
He has been nominated by a number of children, and staff, for our Headteachers Award, given to children who show regular special care for others.
We have been asked to mention to local residents in Landkey and Swimbridge, that if a few more people sign up for broadband, this will become a reality in the district. For more information you can contact John Purser on 830477, or e-mail to broadband830@yahoo.co.uk

Dear Parents,
Next Monday morning work commences on extending our playground. This should be a real improvement to our school, and will more than compensate for the space lost to our office extension.
On Tuesday, Years 1 and 2 have the opportunity for tennis coaching at the Tarka Tennis Centre in Barnstaple. Please see the note below about this.
On Wednesday, Fire Officers from the Barnstaple Fire Station will be in school reminding children of the dangers of fire.
By the time you read this letter, Governors and Staff will have had the post-Ofsted inspection report meeting.
The R.E. Report has now been received. If you would like to read the full report, please ask, as this is available in the school office. A summary is attached. Obviously, we are very pleased with this report.
At this time of year the school has a plethora of statistical information relating to standards and performance ? this is in addition to the inspections. The County has officially categorised our school as Above Expectation. A graph is attached.
Each school also has a Performance and Assessment Report (PANDA) which was published this week. Our attainment is summarised as
KS1 National Curriculum tests/tasks 2003
Reading B
Writing C
Maths C
KS2 National Curriculum tests/tasks 2003
English A*
Maths A*
Science A
All subjects A*
The grades mean :
A* This means that pupils results are very high in comparison with the national average. The schools results are within the range of the top 5% of school across the Country.
A This means that pupils results at the school are well above the national average. The schools? results are within the range of the top quarter of schools across the country but not the top 5%.
B This means that pupils results at the school are above the national average. The schools? results are within the range of the top forty per cent of schools across the country but not the top quarter.
C This means that pupils results at the school are broadly in line with the national average. Differences from the national average or the average for schools in similar contexts are unlikely to be statistically significant.
Below these are grades D, E and E*
We also need to update the personal information held on the computer for all pupils and parents. Please therefore check the attached Data Collection Sheet, and make any necessary changes, and then return to school.
Through our participation in the School Sports Co-ordinator Programme, children in Years 1 and 2 (not Reception) will be travelling to the Tarka Tennis Centre, in Barnstaple, on Tuesday afternoon from 1 ?3.30pm. They will return by 3.30pm. This activity is funded by the SSCO and so will not need a parental contribution. The children will receive professional coaching in short tennis, in preparation for a Tennis Festival being held at the Tennis Centre on Thursday 4th December (10.00 am ? 12.00 midday.

Dear Parents,
Many thanks for your support during our recent school inspection. The school governors will receive their feedback next Friday afternoon, and a summary of the Inspector?s findings will be sent to all parents shortly afterwards. The initial feedback from the Ofsted team is positive.
On Monday the County Assessment Unit circulated details of how each school performs when compared with others in Devon. I include one of their graphs below. This shows each school by a separate note, with an average line. It shows Swimbridge School right at the top for progress made from Year 2 to Year 6.
On 17th November work should commence on constructing our new playground. This Saturday we hope the builders will finally be able to complete the new extension by finishing the exterior facing and putting a time capsule into the wall.
This week, along with our Inspectors, we had a group of marines from Chivenor who talked to some of the younger children about Remembrance Day, and Berwick Coates, en ex-evacuee pupil at this school during World War 2 who was interviewed by Class 4.
The school has a new computerised registration system which, amongst other things, generates letters to parents of late-comers and absentees. Please ensure that your child arrives at school between 8.50 and 8.59 am each day. If he, or she, is ill, please telephone the school as soon as possible.
IMPORTANT SAFETY NOTICES :
1. Please ensure that all visitors close and bolt the school gate every time. A number of parents regularly forget the safety of our children is at stake!
2. After school no children must leave the premises until parents come and collect them, unless they are local children who walk home.
Congratulations to Whitney Beer and Corena Balment for gaining a bronze award for reading 10 books for Bookworms
We have, in the school office, vouchers giving 10% off prices in the National Schoolwear Centre, in Barnstaple. They now have Swimbridge School sweatshirts in stock. If you would like one of these vouchers, please call in to the office to collect one.

Next Tuesday 21st October Class 3 will be swimming at the South Molton pool while Class 4 will be participating in the Fit for Fun day at Goodleigh, so long as we have received parental consent forms. Wellington boots for the Farm Treasure Trail would be advisable for these children.
Recently we had some interesting news about the Glebe Field, opposite the school. Apparently the Diocese, who currently owns the field, is in discussion with Devon County Council with a view to selling part (or all) of the field to the County. Part of the land would be earmarked for a new school at some time in the future. In the meantime, the Glebe Field would become a school playing field, with community use out of school hours. From the school?s point of view this is extremely encouraging news as we will be better able to comply with the P.E. National Curriculum. The village would also have a community recreation field. The influence of SNAP should be gratefully acknowledged. The school governors, staff, parish council and SNAP have not been involved in the negotiations, but hopefully all views/suggestions will be sought.
Please let me know if you are considering upgrading your inkjet printer (with parallel, not USB port connections). We are looking for a couple of working parallel port printers for a couple of our older computers.
Thank you for completing your Parental Ofsted and R.E. questionnaires, and for attending last evening?s parents meeting with the Ofsted Inspectors.
We would like to invite you to take part again in this years 'Operation Christmas Child' shoebox appeal, by sending a filled shoebox to deprived children who are victims of war, poverty, famine or disease. Please read the attached leaflet for full instructions and bring in your completed shoebox by the 2nd week after half term.
We have recently started a 'Headteachers Award' to be presented to children who show real care for others. Teachers nominate children and children are encouraged to let their teachers know of really helpful pupils. Our first winner is :
Whitney Beer
Year 6 Netball, which started at Filleigh last week continues from Friday 7th November. Due to illness this was postponed today and next week.

If you would like to discuss your childs progress at school, please book an after school meeting.

Congratulations to these children for completing stamp cards for hard work and good behaviour :

If you wish to discuss your child's progress at school, please book an after school appointment.
