Next Tuesday 21st October Class 3 will be swimming at the South Molton pool while Class 4 will be participating in the Fit for Fun day at Goodleigh, so long as we have received parental consent forms. Wellington boots for the Farm Treasure Trail would be advisable for these children.
Recently we had some interesting news about the Glebe Field, opposite the school. Apparently the Diocese, who currently owns the field, is in discussion with Devon County Council with a view to selling part (or all) of the field to the County. Part of the land would be earmarked for a new school at some time in the future. In the meantime, the Glebe Field would become a school playing field, with community use out of school hours. From the school?s point of view this is extremely encouraging news as we will be better able to comply with the P.E. National Curriculum. The village would also have a community recreation field. The influence of SNAP should be gratefully acknowledged. The school governors, staff, parish council and SNAP have not been involved in the negotiations, but hopefully all views/suggestions will be sought.
Please let me know if you are considering upgrading your inkjet printer (with parallel, not USB port connections). We are looking for a couple of working parallel port printers for a couple of our older computers.
Thank you for completing your Parental Ofsted and R.E. questionnaires, and for attending last evening?s parents meeting with the Ofsted Inspectors.
We would like to invite you to take part again in this years 'Operation Christmas Child' shoebox appeal, by sending a filled shoebox to deprived children who are victims of war, poverty, famine or disease. Please read the attached leaflet for full instructions and bring in your completed shoebox by the 2nd week after half term.
We have recently started a 'Headteachers Award' to be presented to children who show real care for others. Teachers nominate children and children are encouraged to let their teachers know of really helpful pupils. Our first winner is :
Whitney Beer
Year 6 Netball, which started at Filleigh last week continues from Friday 7th November. Due to illness this was postponed today and next week.
If you wish to discuss your child?s progress at school, please book an after school appointment.

Congratulations to the Brocklehursts for growing the largest pumpkin (seeds purchased at PTA Summer Fayre)
You will be pleased to hear that work on our new playground is due to start on 17th November Watch this space.
For your information, in the extremely unlikely event that there were an emergency at school and the building had to be evacuated, the staff would take the children to the Jubilee Hall, where they would be collected by parents. Dear Parents,
Many thanks for everyones kind Harvest donations. The current total of £173 was raised towards our continuing sponsorship of Atilat and Sanjay through Action Aid. In all we need £400, so further donations are very welcome. On Friday 17th October, the school is hiring Cascades at Ruda, Croyde, once again and all families and their friends and relations are invited. The cost of £1.50 per person includes 25p towards our Harvest collection.
Please find attached a letter and a questionnaire concerning the forthcoming Ofsted Inspection.
Next Friday morning, Class 4 will be visiting Cobbaton Combat Museum as part of our work on life during World War 2. The cost is £5.00, including entrance to the museum and transport. The children will be back for lunch.
This week we had a visit from Ray Liverton, a pupil at Swimbridge School during the War. He spoke to the children, answered their questions, and even brought his original gas mask. Later we will be visited by an ex-evacuee pupil, to enhance our living history.

The result of our Parent/Governor election, counted today, is that Andy Comerford is the new parent representative on our Governing Body. Thanks to Judith Heard for also standing, and to Yvonne Partington for fulfilling the post for the past three years.

On Tuesday 14th October, Class 3 has been invited to the Burton Gallery in Bideford to spend the day in an Art workshop. More details later. The following week, Class 4 will be involved in the Healthy Eating Day (see below) and so only Class 3 will swim on that occasion. The day incorporates initiatives from several agencies. The Department of Healths 5 a day initiative encourages us all to increase our fruit and vegetable intake and to take on a healthier lifestyle ? which includes more physical exercise. WEEKLY NEWSLETTER
Friday 26th September 2003 www.swimbridge.ik.org
Dear Parents,
On Thursday 2nd October at 9.30 am you are invited to our simple harvest festival service in the Parish Church. Once again we are collecting to raise funds to sponsor our two third world children, Atilat Abaagri (aged 8, from Ghana) and ten-year old Sanjay Singh from India. To continue our Action Aid sponsorship of these two children, we need to raise £400. In previous years, families, governors and staff have contributed towards this fund by sending cash or cheques (payable to Swimbridge Primary School) in the envelopes which children bring to the Harvest Service, as an altar donation. Please help if you possibly can.
Atilat Abagri was born in 1995 and is one of a family of 4. She attends school and lives in Yarigu, Ghana, where her family have a small plot of land on which they grow millet, beans, groundnuts and vegetables. They keep a few goats, chickens and guinea fowl. Atilat?s house is made of mud and thatch and there is a bore hole providing clean water half a km away. Most of the year is very dry only those with access to water can grow anything during the drought which can last for months. The severe and unreliable climate is one of the main factors contributing to the extreme poverty of the people here.
Sanjay Singh was born in 1993. He also attends school. He is in a family of three children living in the Sidhi district of Madhya Pradesh, India. Low incomes and lack of employment means that many families, like his, have high debts. There is little healthcare in the area. During the summer months his family have to travel up to 2 km to fetch fresh water. Sanjays family depend on agriculture or the forest to earn an income and feed themselves. Crops like rice, maize, kodo and kutki (types of millet) are commonly grown although there is very little spare to sell at the market.
It was good to see so many parents at last Wednesdays ParentTeacher consultations. Dont forget you are always welcome to book an after school appointment with your child?s teacher.
Please find attached electoral statements from our candidates for the position of ParentGovernor, together with voting slips, which are self explanatory. Please return to me in the envelope provided by Thursday 3rd October.
Attached to this newsletter is a leaflet about head lice which you may find useful. We have also been given some vouchers for a free detector comb when you buy Full Marks products from Boots. Please collect one from the School Office if you are interested.
Our PTA is a very important part of our school. Every parent is a member of the PTA and you are encouraged to attend the next meeting on Wednesday 8th October at 8.00 pm. Nominations are requested for officers (chairman, vice chairman, treasurer and secretary). If you would like to nominate a parent (please ask them first), or yourself, please return the form below to me as soon as possible. I must express my grateful thanks to the hard working team of officers who have managed the PTA so well during the last school year. Victoria Comerford (2002/2003 Chair of PTA) has written her end of year report, which is attached.
DON?T FORGET THE PTA QUIZ EVENING ON FRIDAY 26th SEPTEMBER.
Devon Direct Services have appointed Marie Courtney as our new School Cook. This leaves a vacancy for a Meal Time Assistant for 1 hour per day. If you are interested in this appointment, or know of someone who is, please drop me a line.
A few parents may have forgotten their swimming transport donations. These contributions are vital to our swimming programme.

WEEKLY NEWSLETTER
Friday 19th September 2003 www.swimbridge.ik.org
Dear Parents,
· Attached to this letter is a further copy of term dates, until 2005, agreed in March, along with a letter about SNAP?s carnival float.
· Currently there are 2 candidates for the position of parent governor watch out for further details during the week. You should be receiving information about both candidates along with a voting slip.
· Every few years schools are inspected by Ofsted. Our next inspection is due early in November. The views of parents and carers are invited, especially at a meeting for parents and inspectors on Thursday 16th October from 6.30pm to 7.30pm.. We do hope you will be able to attend.
· Don?t forget that we have parent teacher consultations this coming Wednesday from 4.15 pm. Parents are invited to sign up for appointments.
· Our school often accommodates student teachers about to start their teacher training. Recently Anthony Plumb spent two weeks with us prior to starting his course. He writes
?The school as a whole has seemed to me very friendly both adults and pupils and perhaps this is one of the benefits of being a small school. Larger schools that I have been in have perhaps not had such a close-knit community feel. I have enjoyed helping out (as best I could) in the classrooms, and I feel I have gained a lot from observing all the teaching (which has seemed very impressive to me). I don?t want to embarrass you all with praise, so I?ll just say that I wish I was doing my teaching practice here.?
· Our new extension is now virtually complete. If you have not already looked around please do so. On Thursday we welcomed Ted and Joyce Holmes, head and deputy head here over 2 decades ago; Ted was head from 1962 until 1981. They were thrilled at the changes which have occurred at Swimbridge School over the last 20 years ? the incorporation of the school house, extensions behind and to the side of Class 1, Claires House and of course the upgraded boys toilets and the new admin block.
Ted and Joyce Holmes
· Don?t forget the PTA Quiz Night next Friday (26th September). Due to a family wedding I will be unable to attend, but I am sure this will be a highly enjoyable occasion.
· Class 4 will now be visiting Cobbaton Combat Museum on Friday 10th October, a week earlier than advised last week.
· Guitar lessons are now being held on Wednesdays between 9.45 and 11.15 am.
· A number of school sweatshirts (labelled) have apparently gone missing over the last few weeks, so perhaps you could check all your childs clothing to make sure you have the correct items.
· If you havent visited our school website (www.swimbridge .ik.org) you will have missed some interesting innovations including powerpoint tours of our school, weekly newsletters, a summary of school self evaluation, and many examples of childrens work, as well as school news. Our site has just been nominated for the prestigious Golden Owl Award for UK school websites.
· Dont forget our PTA AGM on Wednesday 8th October. Nominations will soon be required for PTA Officers. Many thanks to this years officers who have worked so tirelessly.
· Mrs Beechey would like to remind parents about the contributions for Maths Books please.
· It would appear that Head Lice are once again in school. Please check your childs head, and may I remind you that children should not be in school, if they are infected, until they have been treated.

As a Staff, we greatly value the involvement of parents in children?s learning process. We all know that children make most progress when school and home are working together. To this end we will be holding another parent/teacher consultation evening between 4.15 and 6.30 on Wednesday 24th September. Of course parents are always welcome to book an after school meeting with their child?s teacher. To better inform parents, teachers are once again preparing a summary of what their classes will be covering this term; Class 4?s summary for the Autumn Term (Life in Class 4) is attached.

You probably know how important the Local Education Authority and our school regard regular school attendance. We encourage parents to do their best to take family vacations during school holidays. Please read the LEA document attached to this letter.
South Molton Cub Pack are trying to help a Devon man who is disabled. If they can collect his own weight in milk bottle tops, he could be given a wheelchair which he really needs. We can collect washed tops and pass them on or members of the S.M. Cub Pack can take them directly.

Dear Parents,
Welcome back to the new term. We especially welcome our new children, and their parents, to our school. The new school office will be open :

Tuesday 8.45 - 12.00
Wednesday 8.45 - 4.45 pm
Thursday 8.45 - 3.00 pm
Friday 8.45 - 4.15 pm
You should have received a letter during the summer holidays regarding P.E.kit. We are very pleased that so many children have now got our preferred P.E.kit. In case you did not receive the letter :
For P.E.:
§ P.E. shorts (black or white)
§ White polo shirt, with collar (not the same one as worn during the rest of the day)
§ Short white socks
§ Plimsolls or trainers (not those worn during the rest of the day)
For Gymnastics:
§ Leotard or one-piece swimming costume or shorts and polo shirt (as P.E. kit)
For Games: (usually Wednesday), depending on weather:
§ P.E. kit as above or
§ Track suit or
§ Jogging trousers and sweat shirt and jumper (not those worn during the rest of the day)
§ Trainers or plimsolls; for football and tag rugby - football boots or old shoes
For Swimming:
§ One piece swimming costume
§ Towel
§ Swimming cap
You can purchase draw string bags from the school office (£2.00) along with a selection of thrift shop uniform items. Lost property is also now being kept in the school office.
I mentioned last term about the imminent Parent Governor election. Please consider whether this is a way in which you can serve our school. A separate letter about this is attached.
Swimming recommences for classes 3 and 4 on Tuesday afternoon next week (9th September). This term we will be using the new South Molton pool and for this term only the KS2 pupils will be attending, giving us the opportunity to have smaller swimming groups and hopefully raise standards ever higher. KS1 children are having additional P.E./Gymnastics sessions this term.
Please ensure that your child has the necessary swimming kit (as mentioned previously). In the last few years we have requested a voluntary donation to assist with transport for swimming. A donation of £8.00 per child (to cover all swimming transport for the term) would be gratefully received to assist this vital aspect of the curriculum ; if you have two children, we would ask for £14.00. Please complete the form below, if applicable.
We have a number of musical and extra-curricular activities at school. This list indicates when they recommence:
French Club Monday 8th Sept
Guitars Tuesday 16th Sept
Music Club Tuesday 23rd Sept
Flute/Fife Wed 17th Sept
Brass Thursday 4th Sept
Computer Club Friday 12th Sept
Recorder lessons take place on Monday afternoons commencing next Monday 8th September. If your child is now in Year 3, or new to the school, it would be helpful if your child could have a recorder as soon as possible. Recorders are available from South Molton Music Shop and Barnstaple Music Centre, Cross Street at approx. £4.00. A very limited number of second hand recorders are available from the office at £2.00.
This term our school has been re-organised into three classes with additional teaching assistant support. Recently, however, the number on roll has increased and we are in a position to split Mrs Beecheys class initially for two mornings each week, so that the Reception children are taught by Alison Davies (on a supply basis), an experienced foundation stage teacher, allowing Mrs Beechey to concentrate on the slightly older children in her class. Hopefully, if funding permits, we will increase this provision during the year.
For your information, Marie Courtenay is our acting cook, pending DDS interviews.
A date for your diary : Harvest Festival in the Parish Church 9.30am Thursday 2nd October - Parents welcome
At the very end of last term we invited our Year 6 leavers to complete a questionnaire. Their answers (attached) make very interesting reading.
As always, if you would like to discuss your childs progress/life at school, please feel free to book an after school appointment with your childs teacher.

SUMMER HOLIDAY NEWSLETTER
Friday August 14th 2003
www.swimbridge.ik.org
Dear Parents,
It is unusual to send out a newsletter during the summer holidays but as many parents are currently organising school uniform and P. E. kit for next term it is timely to let you know that we aim to improve provision of P.E. from next term.
Consequently we strongly recommend that children have the following kit, if possible:
For P. E.:
P. E. shorts (black or white)
White polo shirt, with collar (not the same one as worn during the rest of the day)
Short white socks
Plimsolls or trainers (not those worn during the rest of the day)
For Gymnastics:
Leotard or one piece swimming costume or shorts and polo shirt (as P. E. kit)
For Games (usually Wednesday), depending on weather:
P. E. kit, as above or
Track suit or
Jogging trousers and sweat shirt and jumper (not those worn during the rest of the day
Trainers or plimsolls; for football & tag rugby ? football boots or old shoes.
For Swimming:
One piece swimming costume
Towel
Swimming cap
From September Mrs Beechey is taking responsibility for organising our P. E. / Games programme, assisted by Mr Walters and other teachers. She will be letting parents have a programme of activities for the year so that you can ensure that your child has the appropriate kit available. Towards the end of last term a number of children did not have their P. E. kit on the designated days and this disrupted this important part of the curriculum.
Next term Key Stage 1 children will have more P.E. / gymnastics sessions (in the Jubilee Hall) but will not be swimming. Classes 3 and 4 will be swimming at South Molton Pool on Tuesday afternoons ; this is a change from the NDLC. This is to allow more individual tuition without the general public also using the pool.
Please ensure that all school uniform and P. E kit is labelled and school footwear (preferably black shoes) is appropriate (especially for older girls, bearing in mind heel height). We prefer P. E. / Games kit etc to be in a draw string / plimsoll bag, not carrier bags please.
We are very grateful for the great support that parents give our school, not least with school uniform.
At the end of term our Year 6 children completed a questionnaire about the school and significantly almost all mentioned the lack of P. E. / Games facilities. The governors and staff had already decided this would be one of our priorities. There are developments with our proposed playground extension as well!
Our extension and internal school redecoration are nearing completion. We now have the task of moving in and reorganising the school prior to the beginning of next term on Wednesday September 3rd ? see you all then.
HAPPY SUMMER !

This is very unlikely, but all schools do need an emergency plan. We are grateful to the Jubilee Hall committee for their co-operation in this matter.
Congratulations to these children for completing stamp cards for hard work and good behaviour :
Card 1 Laura Ackland
Peter Dawson
Bethany Hill
Ross Oliver
Card 4 Timon Hynes
Ben Peters
Card 5 Danny Lakeman
Next time you are having a clear-out at home, please remember that we are in need of the following items for our lunchtime activity hour :
§ Lego
§ Board Games
§ Construction toys
§ Toy cars
§ Dressing up clothing
Last week I sent out the Parental Questionnaire. This should be filled out for each child at our school. If you need additional copies, please ask Mrs Wadsworth in the Office. These need to be returned by Wednesday 14th October.
You may be aware that as a Church School, we have a separate Religious Education inspection. If you would be kind enough to complete the attached RE questionnaire, the RE Inspector would be most grateful. Again, one form per child.
May I also remind parents about the swimming donations, and that photograph orders need to be returned by Monday 13th October please.
Please could you make sure that your child has a coat in school at all times.
Thank you for your continued support.

Governors regularly visit school in a critical friend role. Recently they have completed an Ethos Monitoring questionnaire about values in the school. I will soon be in a position to report their findings.
On Monday 6th October, Class 3 will visit the Parish Church as part of their R.E. work. On Tuesday 14th October, Class 3 has been invited to the Burton Gallery in Bideford to spend the day in an Art workshop. More details later. On this occasion only Class 4 will be swimming at the South Molton Pool. The following week, Class 4 will be involved in the Healthy Eating Day (see below) and so only Class 3 will swim on that occasion. Please check that all children in my swimming group have shorts and tee shirts or pyjamas for each swimming session until the end of November to enable them to participate in personal survival swimming.
Congratulations to all teams who participated in last Fridays PTA quiz night especially the winning staff team. Many thanks to the organisers.

The day incorporates initiatives from several agencies. The Department of Healths 5 a day initiative encourages us all to increase our fruit and vegetable intake and to take on a healthier lifestyle ? which includes more physical exercise. Swimbridge Primary School

Yesterday all children were involved in a successful African Dance session following our Indian Dance workshop last term.

Next week Guitar lessons re-start on Tuesday. Flutes/Fife also re-start but there is now a change of day from Wednesdays to Mondays. French club also re-started on Monday with more members than we had expected. There will be a note about this coming to parents within a few days.

Some of you may remember Helen Hampton (now Mrs Morley). We are pleased to announce that she has given birth to a baby girl Emily Jane born on 7th September

Dear Parents,
Welcome back to the new term. We especially welcome our new children, and their parents, to our school. The administration extension and upgraded boys cloakrooms have now virtually been completed (except for some exterior work). Parents are welcome to come and have a look around. The new school office will be open :
Monday 8.45 - 3.15 pm

G.D.Reed, Headteacher
