Dear Parents,
Weather permitting our SPORTS AFTERNOON will take place on the school field next Thursday 17th July. Everyone is welcome. Cream Teas, organised by Swimbridge pre-school, will be available in the Jubilee Hall following the sports.
Sports day is popular with pupils as they are all involved, all of the time. The events are organised to develop a range of athletic skills and the children have to work together to score points for their team. Please feel free to follow your child?s team around the course. As usual there will be a pre-school race and we invite all pre-school children to participate; there will be a small prize for everyone.
The events will commence at 1.45 p.m. and we hope to finish soon after 3 p.m. Children whose parents are present will be dismissed at the end of the events. Children without parents present will remain with their teacher and can be collected from the Jubilee Hall / school field. Children who normally walk home on their own, whose parents are not present, will be dismissed at the end of the events so long as a note agreeing to this is received from their parents in advance.
You will have already received the great news about Year 6 English and Maths SAT results. This week the Science results arrived, and the trend continues!! 100% attained level 4 (the expected level) and 73% achieved level 5. A summary of all these results is printed overleaf.
On Tuesday next, Class 4 will be on a geography field trip. We will leave just after 9.00am and should be back in school before 3.30pm. There is no charge for this trip. Children will need a packed lunch, school uniform and a rainproof coat. A clipboard would be useful. Please return the parental permission slip below.
Classes 1 and 2 will be attending the Infant Music Festival on Tuesday 16th July, at South Molton Community College. Please sign the parental permission slip below if you are happy for your child to go.
Don?t forget the Family Fun Day in aid of CLIC at North Devon Farm Park on Saturday 19th July, 1.00pm
I am sure that many parents would like to join staff in providing a leaving present for Alison Lilly, who sadly leaves us at the end of term. Donations can be sent to Mrs Wadsworth or another class teacher.
We hope you found the recent Parent/Teacher interviews useful. Don?t forget that you are welcome to discuss your child?s progress at any time in the year; please book an appointment.
Many parents are probably interested in the progress of our extension. Originally, this was due for completion in late May, but due to numerous technical problems, this has been delayed. Unfortunately, there has been a problem with the windows, and although the interior is 99% complete we have had to wait for new wooden windows, and consequent stonework to be done, hopefully in the next few weeks. Following this, floor coverings will be laid and we can start to move in. A special thanks must go to all the staff and children who have coped so well.
Last week I wrote about musical tuition and French Club requirements for September. Please return the form on last week?s letter if applicable.

Dear Parents,
This has been a week of success at Swimbridge School. Year 6 SAT results are currently being sent to school. We have received the English results and every child attained the expected level, or better; in fact 55% were awarded level 5 (lower secondary school expectation) while 45% attained level 4, the expectation for Year 6. In Maths, 100% of Year 6 children attained the expected level; in fact 91% reached level 5. One of our pupils attained an incredible 99 out of 100, which must rank as a top mark nationally.
These results match the progress made in Year 2, where 54% attained the expected level (2b) in English Writing, and 100% gained the expected level or better in Maths. Other results will, hopefully, become available shortly.
Congratulations should go to Sharon Newnham (one of our learning support assistants), for gaining an A grade in her Certificate of Higher Education course through Plymouth University. This course, on a par with a degree, could be used as a step towards a teaching qualification.
Congratulations for completing Stamp Cards for good work and helpfulness :

C.L.I.C. Fun Day at North Devon Farm Park Saturday 19thJuly 1.00pm to 6.00pm
We have recently received £27 from Nestle (Box tops collection) and £24 for empty computer cartridges. Many thanks
Could I remind all parents of the great importance of checking and, if necessary treating, children for headlice.
A large number of children still have un-named clothing, P.E. kit, trainers etc.; please label all of your childs belongings. A draw-string bag is the preferred type for P.E. kit, which should be in school every day.
Children in Years 5 & 6 will have the opportunity to take part in the Paignton Residential in May 2004. The cost will be in the region of £145, so start saving now if your child wishes to be involved.
We endeavour to provide a range of extra-curricular activities and musical tuition. We are currently planning some of these for next September, and would like to know requirements for guitar, brass, flute/fife and French Club. Instrumental tuition takes place in school time, French (and other clubs) after school. French Club has few members at the moment, which is a shame as this provides an enjoyable introduction to the language and culture of France. Details of music club and computer club next term.
All children from Year 3 onwards have the opportunity to learn the recorder, an ideal way to learn how to read music. We ask parents of Septembers Year 3 children to provide their child with a recorder for next term.
Dont forget the English Speaking Board Exams will be on Thursday 10th and Friday 11th July. Please could parents of the children involved rehearse with their children this weekend, and make sure they have all their books/props etc. in school next week.
Please return unwanted school photos, or the remittance, by next Monday.
This year we will be presenting all of our Year 6 leavers with a special book Its Your Move on the last day of term Tuesday 22nd July. This is a guide to moving to secondary school. It includes articles and a space for pupils to collect signatures as they leave our school.
School administrator/P.A. required from 1st September 2003 for approx 20 hours per week, term time + days preceeding and following each term.
Applicants should be flexible, well-organised and able to work under pressure, with good inter-personnel skills. Previous experience with SIMS, FMS6, Word and Excel considered essential. First Aid qualification desirable.

Dear Parents,
Firstly, many thanks to everyone who organised, helped or attended our Summer Fayre last Saturday. The sun shined and the grand sum of £647.91 was raised. A proportion of this will go towards our proposed new playground, which we hope will be set in motion shortly.
We have now sent off our Tesco Computers for Schools vouchers (all 17,900 of them) which should be redeemed for two computers an RM P.C. and an Alphasmart lap-top style machine. Any more vouchers can still be banked for next year, so please still send them in.
Unfortunately, we still seem to have children with headlice. Can I remind you that children who are infected must remain away until they have been treated this is to prevent infection of other children.
Next week some of KS2 children will be taking part in the SM area Athletics competition. Please look out for a separate note about this.
It appears that a few parents are not regularly receiving Weekly Newsletters. Please ask your child for the Newsletter every Friday. Copies are posted on the school notice board and on the website; www.swimbridge.ik.org.
On recent letters there were some parent consent forms. If these are not returned, children are unable to participate in these events.
School photographs have been distributed to older and younger classes and will be issued to other children very shortly. There is no obligation to purchase, but we ask that you return unwanted photos as soon as possible, or return the remittance.
School Reports should be sent out today. We hope they are informative. There will be an opportunity to discuss your child?s report on Thursday 3rd July between 4.00pm and 7.00pm please sign up on the lists held by the class teachers. We try to send reports to both parents if they do not both live in the family home. Year 6 SAT results have not yet been received in school: these will be sent out when published.
If your child is in Class 4, please ensure that you sign (and add comments if applicable) your child?s homework diary every weekend.
For the safety of all of our children we endeavour to keep the school gate closed at all times. When parents enter and leave the premises please close and bolt the gate. Parents with pre-school children are asked to keep them with them at all times.
A reminder that Class 3 and 4 children need to have paid their Killarney Springs deposit by Friday 4th July.
Congratulations to Sarah Spencer who has won a prize in the Woolworths Harry Potter Art Competition. Also to Gemma Hayter for receiving a commended grade in her recent ballet exam.

Dear Parents,
The P.T.A. Summer Fayre is happening tomorrow afternoon commencing at 2.00pm in the Jubilee Hall. We hope that you, your family and friends, and neighbours will be able to attend. There will be a wide variety of attractions and stalls, plus plenty of refreshments.
Please bring unsold raffle tickets and/or stubs and money to the fayre if you haven?t already done so. Thanks to all those who have sold these. Further donations of cakes, bottles, tins, books and plants are very welcome. The Jubilee Hall will be open from 11.30am to receive these. Helpers to prepare the hall and manage stalls would be very welcome. Volunteers to help clear up afterwards would be especially well received!
In the past our P.T.A. (to which all parents and teachers belong) has provided many extras for our school including computers, software, books, a contribution to Claires House, play and P.E. equipment, photocopier, T.V. and video etc. etc. Currently we are saving to provide play/leisure equipment for our planned playground extension. The more money we raise on Saturday, the more equipment we can provide for the pupils at our school.
School photographs have been distributed to the youngest and oldest children today. There is no obligation to purchase but we would appreciate an immediate return if you do not want to keep these. Other children will receive photographs during the next few days.
On Tuesday morning Class 3 will be joining in with other schools for the Area Music Festival at Filleigh School. Due to space limitation, this is only open to children. Travel will be by coach for which there is no charge.
Congratulations to both football teams who played in the South Molton Tournament this week. The ?A? team were undefeated until the semi-final!

Dear Parents,
We close this afternoon for our half term holiday and reopen on Monday 2nd June.
Many of us had an enjoyable afternoon last Sunday when we cycled to Fremington. Congratulations to the Lang family for winning the treasure hunt, and a special thanks to all those who organised the excellent barbeque and refreshments. Our next major PTA event is our Summer Fayre on Saturday afternoon, June 21st, a date to book!
Congratulations to these avid readers for taking part in our Bookworms reading programme: Joshua Stoneman ( Bronze Award )and Tom Floyd ( Silver Award.)
We have had an incredible amount of Lost Property recently, three black sacks worth in about 8 weeks. This includes 15 school jumpers, 17 shoes/trainers and 7 pairs of trousers etc. All were unnamed. We expect all children to take care of their clothing, but unless it is clearly labelled it cannot be returned if mislaid, and children, being children, do mislay clothing. Can I suggest that over the holiday you check that all of your childs clothing is named. Please can you also double check your childs hair for head lice during the break.
Can I remind you that all children need P. E. / Games Kit at school every day. We prefer this to be kept in a drawstring P.E. bag rather than carrier bags which tend to split.
Parent/teacher consultations are scheduled for early July. In the meantime if you would like to discuss any aspect of your childs education please book an after school appointment with your childs teacher.
Besides musical tuition in brass, guitars and flute/fife, we have after school French, Computer (restarting Friday 6th June for years 5 and 6) and Music Clubs. The French Club, especially, has vacancies. This runs on Mondays from 3.30 to 4.20 pm, and provides children from year 2 onwards with an enjoyable introduction to the French language. Please let me know if you would like your child to join in.
A few years ago the North Devon Journal wrote an article about Swimbridge school. I attach a copy of this article, as it gives an interesting insight into our school.

Dear Parents,
I am sure that you will be pleased to hear that our school has, once again, been awarded a School Achievement Award from the DfEE. This is awarded to schools who achieve well above average results in the KS2 SATs (in 2002) or substantially improve results between 1999 and 2002, both of which apply to our school.
Next week is designated as Test Week for classes 3 and 4, when children undertake a number of tests and tasks to ascertain progress made and target future learning. Year 6 children will be taking their statutory targets and it would be helpful if parents of these children especially could check they have pens, pencils, rulers, rubbers etc. with them every day. We try to make this week as stress free as possible with more relaxed activities during the afternoons (P.E. kit needed every day). Early nights and plenty of sleep will certainly help during this important week. For information the Year 6 tests are designated
Mon Science Test A, Science Test B
Tue Writing Tests, Spelling Tests
Wed Reading Test
Thu Mental Maths, Maths Test A
Fri Maths Test B
Other year groups will be having similar tests, to their appropriate level. Later in the year there will be an opportunity for parents to discuss individual progress with your childs teacher following publication of individual reports at the end of June.
To celebrate the end of Test Week, we have arranged a cycle ride/treasure hunt on Sunday 18th May, leaving from the Railway Station at 2.00 pm and travelling to Fremington Quay for a barbeque etc. There will be a further letter about this later, in the meantime pump up your tyres and dust down your bicycles. Transport for bicycles from Swimbridge and Landkey to Barnstaple Station can be arranged. Those who wish to join us at Fremington (at 2.30ish) withour cycling are also welcome. Make this a Family Fun Activity!
National Walk to School Week runs from 19th to 23rd May. Did you know that walking to school helps in these ways
· It helps children develop personal and road safety skills.
· Children who have walked to school are more alert and ready to learn
· Walking to school is less stressful than driving and will also help save you money.
Our collection of Tesco vouchers is going very well. To date we have 9,000 of the 13,000 we need. I am confident that we will get the required amount if everyone who has been collecting them for us can let us have the tokens before half term. Thank you once again for your support.
School meals at Swimbridge are very tasty! Free school meals are now available to recipients of Income Support, Income Based Job Seekers Allowance, and, now, those people in receipt of Child Tax Credits where the family income is less than £13,230 pa.
If your circumstances fall within any of these 3 categories, free school meals are your child?s right, so please apply. Mrs Wadsworth can give you further advice.
Of course, school meals can also be paid for. At £6.75 per week they represent great value. (Please may I remind those parents who seem to have forgotten, that the daily price increased to £1.35 after the Easter Holidays!)
On Saturday 17th May, there will be an event, organised by SNAP, not to be missed. Nicola Oliver writes
SNAPs talent show next Saturday will be a memorable one, with lots of excellent acts lined up, including five well-known village chaps performing an interesting routine, choreographed by Steph Dyer; as well as your own Headmaster doing one of his entertaining monologues; and plenty of other singing and dancing talents. It will be a fun night, and tickets are only £3, available from Nicola Oliver (830917) or Sarah Smith (830693). A bar will help it all go with a swing!
If you would like an after-school consultation with your childs teacher please book an appointment.
The school Thrift Shop is still operating, despite the lack of a suitable space. Therefore, if you have any suitable items to sell, or would like to purchase any clothing, please see either Steph Dyer of Bridget Vellacott.
Dont forget the PTA Summer Fayre - Saturday afternoon 21st June the longest day.
Advance notice :Our school nurse will be running PSHE sex education classes for Year 6 children during June; further information nearer the time. Parents have the right to request their children are withdrawn from these sessions; please see me if this might be the case.
Building work continues. We hope that most of it will be complete early in June, when we can relocate the office and get back to normal.

Ben Mansell and Alexandra Haydn-Higgins for completing the Gold Award (30 books) for Bookworms.
Sarah Spencer for once again winning the Brian Fords monthly colouring competition.
Gemma Hayter for scoring 97% and gaining a distinction in her Grade 1 music theory exam.
Well done to Ellie Lang and Jules Davies who did so well yesterday at the area sports competition at South Molton. Our school came 3rd!
We are approaching the testing time of year when years 2 and 6 undertake statutory SAT tests and years 3, 4 and 5 take optional SATs (optional for the school, not the children!). These are important but we hope to make them as stress-free as possible, and we ask parents to help with this; we just want children to do their best.
Year 6 children would benefit (in addition to their usual homework) from methodically going through their Maths exercise and revision books during the Easter period.

WEEKLY NEWSLETTER
Friday 9th May 2003 www.swimbridge.ik.org

Im sure you join with the staff in wishing all the best to Alison Hancock as she gets married on Saturday. When she returns she will be Mrs Lilley! Thank you to those parents and Governors who joined with us to purchase a Wedding present for Alison and Neil . We have given the happy couple a telephone, an iron, a dustbuster and two pillows (all from the wedding list!).
Tesco vouchers are still coming in we now have Will we get 13,000 for a new P.C. I think so!!!
Congratulations to:
Happy Easter.
