Pilgrimages to Exeter Cathedral 2008

February 2008 saw Class 4 set out on its bi-annual pilgrimage top Exeter Cathedral, as part of our Religious Education work on Pilgrimages and Religious Journeys.

Part of the spiritual experience, unique to our school, is to have our own service in one of the Cathedral chapels. This year we were lead by Bishop Richard himself!

You can download some of our pictures at the bottom of the page.

Wow, the cathedral was absolutely amazing. I didn’t expect that we were going to go through the big west doors. When we got inside it was enormous: the biggest place I ever saw.

When we were walking round the Cathedral I felt a little embarrassed but I was doing it for God so I just kept walking. When we came to the Lady Chapel and saw the incense pot it smelt weird but eventually I got used to the smell; it was strange to light a candle for the first time.

The Lady Chapel made me feel close to God but I don’t know why. The builders of the Cathedral must have had amazingly strong faith in each other to build a building that large. The builders must have wanted to make the building perfect because it was God’s house and they knew that God would be proud if they made the building as perfect as they could.

When I carried the candle I felt really strange because I was leading the entire school to a different place in the cathedral. I would like to visit the cathedral again because its such a holy place to be in and it get in to my head. The cathedral is such a good place to pray because no one will disturb you.

In the Lady Chapel it was relaxing and made us feel closer to God. At the start, going through the gates, Paul and me a warm feeling inside of us. We think that the beliefs of the original builders affected the construction of the building because they wouldn’t a massive building for fun would they.

We both think that the building had to be perfect because it was the “House Of God”! People call it the “House Of God” because Jesus told people to build places that you could go and worship God.

Paul and I felt special when we carried the cross, the icon, the bishop’s staff and the candles.

I (Nathan) wouldn’t necessarily want to go again because I felt it was dreary and weird but Paul wants to go again because it was good and fun.

We think the Cathedral is a suitable place to pray because it is the House Of God.
