Anglo Saxon Placenames Homework

SAXON PLACE NAMES: Homework for Class 4

Go to http://www.woodlands-junior.kent.sch.uk/Homework/saxons/placenames.htm to find a useful article then answer these questions:


a. Which person in a Saxon village often gave his name to the village?

b. What might the place name READING mean?

c. What is a FORD? Give two examples of place name with this name in it.

d. Explain what ING in a place name means. Try to give some examples.

e. What might GREENWICH mean?

f. Padstow and Stowmarket both have STOW in their names. What might STOW mean? Using a map can you find an East Anglican port by the sea with Stow in it's name?

g. Produce a sheet to explain how the names of the days of the week originated
or
h. Produce a crossword giving clues about place name meanings, and maybe a word bank eg: a city in south Devon meaning the mouth of the River Plym (Plymouth); a town with green fields (Greenwich).
