Secrets

Years 4 and 5, with Mrs Evans, have used the story 'SECRETS' by Anita Desai as a starting point for a writing a shared class story.

In this story from India Rohan is told off by his teacher. He is on his way home with a letter for his parents. For obvious reasons he wished for a magic rubber?

Glancing around, to make sure no one was looking, Rohan quickly erased each individual bad comment from his letter and replaced them with complementary comments.

He woke up the next day and thinking the rubber was a dream, Rohan went to where the school had been, to find a bear patch of earth. He was astonished to see the school wasn't there and began to feel down in the dumps as he missed his mates.

"I'm so thick and stupid for rubbing out my mates, I'm really annoyed with myself," he muttered shamefully.

With no on to play with Rohan walked around kicking at the dust until he reached the banyan tree. There he saw his friend the kind gentle cobbler sat in the shade of the tree.
"What's up mate?" the cobbler asked him, as two fat tears rolled down Rohan's cheeks.
Rohan told him how he had found the rubber and rubbed out the school. He told him how he wanted to go to school to see his friends.
"Well mate its up to you to fix it".
"How am I supposed to do that?" replied Rohan.
"Use the rubber and rub again where the school was."

Rohan ran as fast as he could back to where the school had been, and rubbed furiously at the air. Slowly bit by bit the school reappeared by magic.

Rohan was delighted. He was even more pleased when one by one his friends came back.

He realised the rubber could cause mischief .He then wished, with all his heart, that the rotten rubber would go away. And with that the rubber vanished and was never seen again.
